[UPDATED] Najib's lawyer arrives at KL courts complex

KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's lawyer arrived at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex in Jalan Duta here at noon today amid expectations that a RM50 million fine could be paid.

Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee, a member of Najib's legal team, was seen entering the complex at noon, while Najib's special officer, Ahmad Lutfi Azhar, arrived earlier at 11.35am.

Their presence comes amid speculation that payment of the fine could pave the way for Najib to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.

Najib, 73, has been held at Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022, following his conviction in the SRC International case.

Lutfi, who was seen at the court complex's lobby, said a statement would be issued once everything had been concluded.

Journalists have gathered at the lobby and outside the High Court Criminal Registry office.

Police presence has also been heightened at the court complex, with barricades erected at the entrance.

Lutfi was later seen entering the registry office with Farhan.

When asked what was going on, Farhan merely smiled before entering the office.

On Sept 18, Najib received a conditional pardon from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.

Najib was sentenced to 12 years in jail and fined RM210 million after the High Court found him guilty on July 28, 2020, of seven charges involving the misappropriation of RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd.
