Orlando Pirates’ next match after the FIFA international break

Orlando Pirates have made an impressive start to the 2026/27 campaign, winning their opening five Betway Premiership matches. Their latest outing before the international break ended in a 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants, giving Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side strong momentum heading into the break.

The next challenge will be considerably bigger. Orlando Pirates face Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 October.

ORLANDO PIRATES’ EVIDENCE MAKGOPO AND THALENTE MBATHA BACK IN FULL TRAINING

The international break has given Orlando Pirates valuable time to work with their injured players. The latest medical update has provided positive news regarding two Bafana Bafana internationals.

Mbatha has been recovering from a knee injury that has kept him out since 10 August, while Makgopa has been working his way back from patellar tendinitis. Both players have now returned to full-team training.

Their return gives Ouaddou additional options ahead of the MTN8 final, although the technical team will still have to determine whether both players are ready to handle the demands of a high-intensity cup final.

There has also been encouraging progress among several other players in rehabilitation. Mohau Nkota and Andre de Jong have moved into field-based rehabilitation, while Sihle Nduli has started running on the field as he continues his recovery.

The developments leave Orlando Pirates with a growing group of players moving closer to full availability, although their international commitments could create another challenge before the final.

SIX DAYS AFTER BAFANA BAFANA’S MATCH

Bafana Bafana are scheduled to face Egypt on 4 October, only six days before the MTN8 showpiece. That means the Orlando Pirates players involved with the national team will have limited time to recover and return to their club environment.

This will require careful workload management from the technical and medical teams, particularly for players who have only recently returned from injury. The priority will be to ensure that the squad is physically ready for the final without exposing returning players to unnecessary risk.

Ouaddou will therefore have to balance the demands of the international schedule with his preparations for Mamelodi Sundowns. The situation is especially important for Makgopa and Mbatha, who have made significant progress but still need to build their match fitness after their respective layoffs.
