Indonesia's rice supply secure through June 2027: Minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister and Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas) Andi Amran Sulaiman assured that Indonesia's rice supply will remain secure through June 2027, despite the threat of El Niño-driven severe drought.

"Our food supply, especially rice, remains secure despite global disruptions, including food, energy, and water crises," Amran said during a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He added that the government has taken various proactive measures under the direction of President Prabowo Subianto, primarily by developing agricultural infrastructure to sustain national rice production.

These measures include constructing irrigation systems, retention basins, and pump-based irrigation systems, alongside optimizing paddy fields and swampy lands, as well as launching new rice field development programs to boost food production capacity.

Amran explained that production from standing crops, or paddy fields ready for harvest, is currently projected to reach approximately 10 million metric tons of rice, covering a planted area of 3.8 million hectares.

He also noted that the government rice reserve (CBP), managed by state-run logistics firm Bulog to maintain food price stability, stands at around 5 million metric tons, bringing total national rice availability to roughly 25–26 million metric tons.

Meanwhile, public rice consumption ranges from 2.5 to 2.6 million metric tons per month, meaning the national stock is sufficient for the coming months.

The minister estimated that national rice availability will remain secure through June 2027, taking into account domestic production, government reserves, and public consumption needs.

Beyond meeting domestic demand, Indonesia has also exported rice to Malaysia and provided 10,000 metric tons of rice aid to Palestine.

Amran emphasized that this achievement marks a historic milestone for Indonesia, as the country has not only maintained national food security, but also contributed to meeting the food needs of other nations.
