Indonesia's Free Health Check gets 907,000 patients into treatment

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said that 907,000 people diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension through the Free Health Check (CKG) program had begun receiving treatment, out of 8.3 million cases detected.
Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday, Sadikin said the 2026 CKG program had expanded its focus beyond screening to include treatment and case management. In 2025, he said, the program screened 73 million people and identified 7 million with hypertension.
"These hypertension patients are given medication that they must take every day. So far, 755,000 people have received treatment, which is still a small number. Our target was 80 percent, meaning 80 percent of those 7 million people should receive treatment," Sadikin said.
According to Sadikin, the current treatment coverage represents only about 11 percent of the total number of people identified with hypertension. The government aims for 80 percent of those receiving treatment to eventually regain healthy blood pressure or otherwise achieve improved health outcomes.
"We do not have that data yet; we are still compiling it. Last year, we focused on screening. This year, we are combining screening with case management and medication. Hopefully, by the end of this year or next year, we will be able to measure whether patients have recovered or not," he said.
Sadikin added that the CKG program had reached 109 million people, against its 2026 target of 130 million participants. A total of 116 million people had registered for the program.
"Why is free health screening important? Because the target set for the Health Ministry under the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) is to increase average life expectancy from 72 to 76 years," Sadikin said.
The checks focus on four risk factors, namely blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and obesity. This is because those four indicators are closely linked to the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, which cause many deaths, he said.
"If we can control these four risk factors, research shows that we can significantly reduce mortality, particularly deaths from cardiovascular disease (CVD), which includes conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels. South Korea is one example of a country that has achieved what is known as 'triple 80,'" he said.
Sadikin explained that "triple 80" means screening 80 percent of the population, providing medication to 80 percent of those diagnosed with a disease, and helping 80 percent of those treated achieve good health outcomes.
The CKG program has identified several major health concerns, including dental caries at 32.5 percent, obesity at 18.2 percent, prehypertension at 9.9 percent, hypertension at 9.7 percent, prediabetes at 4.5 percent, diabetes at 2.2 percent, and dyslipidemia at 72.7 percent.
