Jon Bernthal and Ben Affleck's Buddy Thriller Is Officially a Streaming Hit

For those who loved 2016's The Accountant, it was great news that Ben Affleck’s autistic hitman Christian Wolff would finally be returning for a sequel nearly a decade later — and it was even better news that Jon Bernthal would be continuing alongside him as his estranged brother Braxton. For those folks who were impressed by that quirky (but action-fueled) flick when it hit theaters, now is the time to revisit it. Currently making waves as Hulu's second most-streamed movie, The Accountant 2 has blown into a streaming success.
'The Accountant 2' Is the Perfect Action-Based Buddy Comedy for a Night In
Although arguably not as nuanced or intelligent as the first film (another streaming hit), The Accountant 2 is a great time if you’re willing to lean fully into director Gavin O’Connor’s distinct vision for this action franchise. The film was crafted to be different from its predecessor, as O'Connor had no interest in just repeating the same narrative beats— and who could blame him? This works to the film's advantage, of course, as the long-anticipated reunion between Christian and Braxton propels the pair into a high-octane adventure as they aid FinCEN deputy director Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) in uncovering the truth behind the death of her mentor, Raymond King (J.K. Simmons). As they do, they find themselves caught in the middle of a human trafficking operation based just south of the border — and only they can stop it. Christian's silent partner, Justine (Allison Robertson), is also given an expanded role here, expanding this world further than the original film could.
The Accountant 2 really lands due to the effortless chemistry between Affleck and Bernthal. Together, this is a pair made in action-packed heaven, which makes us wonder why it took so long to get this sequel made in the first place. Although the co-leads couldn't be more different — with Christian being a neurodivergent vigilante with few social cues, while Braxton is an unrestrained assassin longing for brotherly love — that's exactly what makes this pulse-pounding dance worth revisiting. Indeed, rather than engaging with a mysterious criminal conspiracy angle the way the first film was structured, The Accountant 2 is more like an action-packed buddy comedy "hang out" movie that pulls no punches and wants you to laugh along with it. It’s ridiculous at times, sure, but it's hard to be bothered by that when you see how much fun Affleck and Bernthal are having on screen — and how much fun you'll be having on the other side of it.
'The Accountant 2' Is a Streaming Hit on Hulu
After making waves on Prime Video earlier this year, The Accountant 2 has once again risen to the challenge by making waves on Hulu. Unsurprisingly, the cast and crew seem to feel the same way about this sequel that audiences do. Addai-Robinson has gone on record to note her hopes to return for a threequel, and O'Connor himself has already confirmed plans for a third entry in the budding action franchise. All we can hope for at this point is that Affleck and Bernthal will be willing to come back for more — and that another entry won't take another decade to hit the big screen.
For a quick 2-hour watch that can't help but command your attention, look no further. It may not be as thought-provoking as Terminator 2: Judgment Day or visually stunning as Mad Max: Fury Road, but it's certainly a sequel that paves its own way by leaning into the strengths of its stars. Now that it's popular on Hulu once more, there's no better time to reunite with Christian Wolff.
