Why Amy Adams Scored Major Cool Mom Points By Working With Jenna Ortega

Amy Adams was certainly enchanted by Jenna Ortega.

The Oscar nominee revealed that she earned some serious mom cred with her and husband Darren Le Gallo’s 16-year-old daughter Aviana Le Gallo for working with Ortega on the upcoming film Klara and the Sun.

“Jenna was so great with her,” Adams exclusively shared with E! News during a joint interview with Ortega. “We hung out at [director Taika Waititi’s] and Avi had a great time talking to Jenna ‘cause Jenna's completely genuine and open and curious and lovely.”

Ortega was equally enthralled with Aviana, raving, “That’s a real impressive girl.”

“Avi is one of the coolest people I've met,” the Wednesday actress added. “She's so sure of herself and cool.”

Adams was in total agreement, sharing that playing a mom in Klara and the Sun—in which Ortega stars as Klara, a robot girl designed to prevent loneliness—gave her a new perspective on parenthood.

“It’s sort of a cautionary tale for me about letting go a little bit,” the 52-year-old explained. “Someone used this word, so I'm stealing it: this ‘anticipatory grief’ of losing them.”

“These are bigger issues inside of Klara,” she continued, “but even just with kids pulling away and becoming independent, there's just such a devastation in kids growing up.”

Adams is also navigating new experiences as Aviana decides if following in her mother’s footsteps is a path she’s interested in taking.

“I don’t know if she wants to act,” Adams shared. “She might explore film as a study, but I'm not sure what area she wants to land in.”

Should Aviana choose acting, she’ll not only have a great coach in Adams, but also in Ortega, who tapped into a new side of her skills by playing a robot in the film based on the 2021 novel by Kazuo Ishiguro.

“It was quite interesting because when I first read the script—like in the novel—it comes off a bit more robotic than what Taika had in mind,” the 24-year-old told E!. “Taika [has a] very singular vision. I wanted to work with him and he was very collaborative. But he wanted her to feel as human as possible.”

As Ortega recalled, the most robotic thing she did in the film was to have “an awkward movement” in the way she walked and moved, as well as “a lot of times having a delayed reaction” to what was going on around her as the character.

“I’m so invested in the people that I'm with that I had to remind myself to make an expression,” she explained. “Like, ‘Oh wait, I'm supposed to show you that I'm enjoying what you're saying.’”

Klara and the Sun is set to be released by Sony Pictures Releasing on Oct. 23.
