Bafana Bafana star tipped for R650 million transfer

Bafana Bafana defender Olwethu Makhanya has been tipped to become a Rangers legend and command a massive transfer fee if he continues his impressive rise in Scotland.

The 22-year-old centre-back has made a strong start to life at Rangers since his high-profile move from Philadelphia Union, quickly establishing himself in the heart of the defence under manager Derek McInnes.

His performances have already attracted plenty of attention, with Rangers Review journalist Derek Clark backing the South African to eventually become the club’s record sale.

Speaking to Kick Off, Clark suggested Makhanya could fetch more than £30 million (approximately R650 million) if he continues developing at his current rate.

“I think he would be a record sale if he does leave. His attributes are what you look for in a modern centre-back,” Clark said.

“He looks like he’s got the whole package. He is very athletic and very young still, still developing, so I think he would be an attractive option for many clubs.

“I think if he does leave, the record sale for Rangers has been Calvin Bassey when he went to Ajax, I think for £22 million (R476 million), but I think Makhanya will go for probably £30 million plus (approximately R650 million). He’s that good. Hopefully he can keep the form.”

Makhanya was on the pitch for the full 90 minutes as Bafana Bafana opened their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 victory over Guinea on Saturday.

The defender was also part of South Africa’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup but did not feature during the tournament.

With his Rangers career still in its early stages, Makhanya now has an opportunity to continue his development in Scotland while strengthening his position in the Bafana Bafana setup.
