What’s next for Orlando Pirates after losing MTN8 trophy to Sundowns?

Translate

Orlando Pirates were sunk 0-2 in the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns on 10 October.

This result ended the Buccaneers’ four-season winning streak in the annual soccer cup competition.

Here’s what’s next for Pirates as they continue their quest to defend the PSL trophy this season.

What happened in the MTN8 final?

Mamelodi Sundowns took an early lead after Teboho Mokoena scored in the 11th minute.

Thabang Matuludi lined up the assist with a pass that went through Pirates defender Lebone Seema.

The early scoreboard pressure kept the Buccaneers on the back foot for the early parts of the game.

Pirates had their chances, with Zambian winger Gamphani Lungu testing goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

After heading into half-time 1-0 up, Sundowns continued marshalling the game their way.

It looked all said and done before Iqraam Rayners scored for the Brazilians from the spot kick.

97 minutes of intense action ended with a 2-0 win for Sundowns, winning their first MTN8 trophy in 5 years.

Can Orlando Pirates still win the PSL?

Saturday’s result may have given Sundowns the psychological edge as the PSL returns on 13 October.

However, this early in the season, Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is not likely to be sweating the result.

Either way, the Brazilians are top of the table with 20 points after 8 games, including 6 wins.

Pirates are 2nd on the log with 19 points – they also have a game in hand over Sundowns.

They will need to bounce back strongly on Tuesday when the PSL returns from the international break.

Pirates will also need to ensure that a rare loss this season does not derail their broader ambitions.

All log details are correct according to the PSL website.

What’s next for Pirates and Ouaddou?

The Buccaneers can still keep pace with Sundowns, starting against TS Galaxy on 13 October (Tuesday).

They then resume continental duties with the CAF Champions League against Namibia’s African Stars.

The first leg will be played 17 October in Gaborone, followed by the return leg at the Orlando Stadium on 23 October.

From 24 October, the Carling Knockout Cup kicks off, according to the PSL website.

Pirates then host the Soweto Derby in the PSL against Kaizer Chiefs on 31 October.

They will only meet Sundowns again in January next year, before hosting their rivals in April.
