KRA Issues Agency Notice To Recover KSh 623 Million Tax Debt From Mike Sonko
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has launched a fresh bid to collect KSh 623.4 million in unpaid tax arrears owed by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, invoking special statutory enforcement powers to intercept funds held by his commercial clients.
In an agency notice dated October 12, 2026, KRA’s Debt, Refunds, and Ledger Management Division appointed an unnamed customer of the former governor as a tax recovery agent, commanding them to channel any monies owed to or held on Sonko’s behalf directly to the taxman.
Breakdown of the KSh 623.4 Million Tax Bill
The enforcement action—issued under Section 42 of the Tax Procedures Act, 2015—relates to individual income tax liabilities accumulated over a five-year period between January 2015 and December 2019.
According to official figures from the authority, the total demand consists of:
-
Principal Tax: KSh 308.9 million
-
Penalties: KSh 15.8 million
-
Accrued Interest: KSh 298.7 million
Strict Directives and Legal Warning
Signed by Njoroge Muiruri, the Debt Enforcement Manager in KRA’s Micro and Small Taxpayers Department, the notice mandates the appointed agent to settle the dues using a valid system-generated payment slip and submit a formal return detailing any funds held on Sonko’s behalf.
“The above-referenced Taxpayer, who is also one of your customers, has outstanding tax arrears amounting to Sh623,389,105,” the notice reads in part. “In exercise of the powers conferred upon me by Section 42 of the Tax Procedures Act, 2015, I hereby declare you to be an agent of the above taxpayer and require you to pay me the sum of Sh623,389,105 from any money which may, at any time.”
KRA emphasized that the agency notice will remain legally binding and active until the KSh 623.4 million debt is recovered in full, even if payments are made in installments.
