With shonen continuing to be one of the most popular and successful genres, anime is, for the most part, dominated by male heroes and protagonists. That said, that doesn't mean the medium doesn't have some great female characters to offer. And the best part is you don't always have to look at shoujo or josei series to find some of them.

Across demographics and genres, anime has provided multiple strong, independent, headstrong female characters across the decades. Whether they're the protagonist, a member of the main cast, or a supporting character that simply stole the show, some of the greatest female anime characters of all time don't just sport interesting designs and overwhelming strength but also their own well-written backstories, complex origins, motivations, aspirations, and independent character arcs.

20 Nico Robin

One Piece

While she may not be the strongest of One Piece's Straw Hats, Nico Robin is certainly one of the series' most well-written female characters. Robin brings along with her one of One Piece's darkest, most tragic backstories that involves the genocide of all her people as well as her being hunted by the World Government and being forced to survive all by herself since she was just a child.

As such, Robin bears the weight of the lives of all of Ohara as she investigates the truth about the Void Century in One Piece. The Enies Lobby Arc also sees her grapple with the weight of her past and find the will to live despite it all. The story of how she inevitably finds friends and freedom in the Straw Hats is still one of One Piece's most beautiful, especially when Robin eventually reunites with her old friend Saul on Elbaph, validating her decision to not give up living.

19 Yor Forger

Spy x Family

Deadly and merciless as an assassin but kind and loving as a mother, Spy x Family's Yor Forger is an incredibly multifaceted character. Beyond just her brother Yuri who she raised all by herself, Yor eventually also comes to care for her new pretend family, including Anya, whom she comes to love as her own daughter.

Beyond her inhuman strength and combat abilities, Yor's reasons for becoming an assassin are also just as admirable, as she simply did what she had to in order to support her family. She still carries this dedication and self-sacrifice into adulthood, and while she may be a little oblivious in matters of love, Yor is just as sincere, kind, and likable as you'd expect the tritagonist of a series to be.

18 Mitsuri Kanroji

Demon Slayer

Putting aside the slight fan service, Demon Slayer actually has quite a great female character in Mitsuri Kanroji. While she certainly competes with Shinobu for this title, what makes Mitsuri the better of the two is her backstory. Mitsuri is known for being freakishly strong and for her unnaturally large appetite, two traits that are not typically considered very feminine, and evidently so, as Mitsuri was unable to find a husband for these very reasons.

However, instead of changing herself, Mitsuri joined the Hashira hoping to find a husband who is her equal. Though her backstory isn't particularly tragic, Mitsuri's character is most definitely that of an outcast who chose to lean into her strength and instead find people who accepted her for who she is, making her quite admirable in this regard.

17 Haruhi Fujioka

Ouran High School Host Club

Out of the host of meek and sweet shojo protagonists, Ouran High School Host Club's Haruhi Fujioka immediately stands out. Even when surrounded by rich and often clueless peers, Haruhi isn't afraid to speak her mind and even educate her fellow host club members on the lives of "commoners" when need be, and without being overly mean or condescending.

Above all, Haruhi isn't afraid to be unapologetically herself, defying the norms surrounding shojo leads. Not only does she not care about gender norms, but she also does not mind presenting herself and being referred to using male indicators. Even so, she still possesses the ability to show vulnerability and depend on her club members in these situations.

16 Maki Zenin

Jujutsu Kaisen

One of Jujutsu Kaisen's strongest female characters who has absolutely stolen the spotlight since Season 3 is Maki Zenin. In a world defined by cursed energy and cursed techniques, Maki is an immediate outlier with her Heavenly Restriction, which puts her on par with the likes of Toji Zenin, who even nearly defeated Gojo.

But of course, the price Maki pays for this strength is heartbreaking. The death of her sister, Mai, adds a complex edge to Maki's newfound power, also leading her on a rampage as she wipes out the entire family that persecuted her and her sister out of vengeance. Kaguya Shinomiya transformed what could have been a simple romantic comedy into one of anime's most memorable character-driven stories. Her ongoing battle of wits with Miyuki Shirogane creates some of the funniest moments in modern anime and one of anime's most toxic and adorable romances.

Beneath the comedy, however, lies an emotionally rich coming-of-age story. Kaguya gradually learns how to express vulnerability, trust others, and pursue happiness on her own terms.
