PM’s pol-sec in 3-cornered fight in Paya Rumput

PKR’s Azman Abidin, a political secretary to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, faces a three-cornered fight in Paya Rumput in the Nov 14 Melaka state election.
Azman, who is contesting in his maiden election, is up against Perikatan Nasional’s Rafie Ahmad and Bersama’s Abdul Rashid Abu Bakar.
Azman is also federal territories PKR chief.
Paya Rumput is traditionally a Barisan Nasional stronghold, though it has changed hands before, when PH won the seat through Bersatu in 2018.
The mixed seat has a 61% Malay electorate, while Chinese voters make up 30%, followed by Indians (6%).
In the 2021 state polls, Umno’s Rais Yasin won the seat with a 629-vote majority in a five-cornered battle. Rais, a senior executive council member, is contesting in Sungai Udang this time around.
