George is back for Young Sheldon's new release — sort of. The Big Bang Theory franchise is currently thriving with two active shows with Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage on CBS and Stuart Fails to Save the Universe on HBO Max. That said, the franchise's expansion efforts were kicked off in 2017, with the debut of Young Sheldon. The prequel, set in the '90s, originally functioned as Sheldon's origins story also introduced the rest of the Cooper family in Texas. By the end of it, the project had already outgrown its premise, becoming a family comedy-drama ensemble.

It's no secret that Young Sheldon's cancellation was met with massive pushback, both from viewers and the people involved in the series. The project was at the top of its game, and it could have gotten better had it stayed on the air for at least one more season. However, The Big Bang Theory canon mandated its pre-determined end, which started with the death of Lance Barber's George. Now, over two years since one of the best family sitcoms in recent memory wrapped, it is coming back with a new release that involved some familiar faces.

Lance Barber Returns For Young Sheldon's Tell-All Book

Now, Young Sheldon is returning with a new expansion project via Jessica Radloff's Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy. The author previously wrote a similar book for The Big Bang Theory which was released in 2022 — three years after the flagship ended. Young Sheldon's counterpart is scheduled to roll out next month, October 2026, promising "major revelations about the show, exclusive behind-the-scenes stories from every cast member, and all the heart that made the show beloved." The foreword is written by Parsons, who functioned as the narrator of the prequel, as well as its executive producer, but more importantly, the project is also bringing back Barber, alongside other cast members of Young Sheldon for the audiobook version.

Radloff offered the first-look at the actor's return to the world of Young Sheldon, as he narrated his parts for the book. For the uninitiated, the author conducted hours of interviews with the people involved in making the show, both in front and behind the camera to map out its history. Snippets of Barber in the booth revealed his look that's different from George's signature style. That being said, a different video treated fans to the actor reprising the role by putting on his iconic Southern accent, evoking nostalgia for anyone who loved the Cooper patriarch throughout Young Sheldon's 7-season run on CBS.

How Barber's Involvement Can Redefine Young Sheldon's Ending

It's worth noting this set-up with the cast wasn't the case for Radloff's The Big Bang Theory book. While all the main ensemble of the nerd-centric sitcom — Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Melissa Rauch, and Mayim Bialik, participated in it, they weren't involved in any of the audio recordings for it. That changes in Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy, as Radloff has confirmed that, aside from Barber, his former castmates, Zoe Perry, Montana Jordan, and others are coming back to record their respective portions of the book.

Having all of them will be a treat and will add to the appeal of getting the audiobook version of the upcoming Young Sheldon new release. That being said, hearing Barber actually discuss the death of George will be particularly special. Despite the countless plot holes created by the prequel, including his casting, considering that he previously played a different character in The Big Bang Theory, George became one of the most beloved characters in the franchise. His death was set in stone from the very beginning, but there was a petition for Young Sheldon to intentionally break canon to keep him alive. Unfortunately, the creatives of the series decided to stick to what was previously established.

The universe is still able to bring Barber back as George in Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, which will return as part of CBS's fall 2026 lineup. However, his returns have been mostly infused with an unexpected twist. The Young Sheldon book will be different, as it allows him and fans to step back at a time where George was still alive.
