Mofokeng turning heads in Belgium as ex-Sundowns star hails his intelligence

Royal Union SG attacker Relebohile Mofokeng has taken the Belgian league by storm since making his high-profile move from Orlando Pirates in July.

The 21-year-old joined the Belgian giants after the FIFA World Cup and has adapted impressively to life in Europe.

Mofokeng has already made his mark for Union SG, scoring four goals in nine appearances across all competitions.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Bennet Mnguni has been impressed by the young winger’s style of play and believes his intelligence has helped him overcome his smaller frame.

“The boy is short and small in stature. To compensate, he makes sure he is always first to the ball and releases it before you can touch him. If you do touch him, it is a foul,” Mnguni told KickOff.

Mnguni believes Mofokeng’s intelligent approach to the game is one of the reasons he is such an exciting player to watch.

“The reason he rarely ends up on the floor is because he avoids contact. He simply wants to move into space. When he dribbles past you, he makes sure you are still five metres away,” Mnguni added.

Mofokeng enjoying life in Belgium

Mofokeng has also continued to make an impact at international level with Bafana Bafana.

The youngster scored twice against Eritrea in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier and has played an integral role in the national team since Pitso Mosimane took charge.

With his strong start in Belgium and growing importance for Bafana Bafana, President yama 2k is quickly establishing himself as one of South Africa’s most exciting young talents.

Mofokeng has already attracted a few teams in his short stay in Belgium and could very well leave Union SG by the end of the season. A brilliant debut season for him will see him join top clubs in Europe.
