OPEN LETTER | ‘Thank you, South Africa’: SA Rugby president hails fans for spirit of Ubuntu

South African Rugby president Mark Alexander has thanked the nation for its support for the inaugural Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series.

The Springboks and All Blacks have produced three memorable Tests to date, in a dramatic series that has captured the attention of rugby fans both locally and internationally.

In an open letter to South Africans on Monday, Alexander praised supporters for creating an atmosphere that showcased the country to visitors from around the world.

“Over these past weeks, we once again demonstrated the true spirit of our nation,” Alexander said.

“With guests travelling from all corners of the world to experience this historic event, you showed them the warmth, generosity and unity that define us as a people.”

‘The spirit of Ubuntu’

Alexander said the way South Africans welcomed visiting supporters reflected the country’s spirit of Ubuntu.

“Your embrace of our visitors reflected the essence of Ubuntu, ‘I am because we are’,” he said.

“You reminded the world that South Africa is strongest when we stand together, support one another and welcome others with dignity and pride.”

The SA Rugby president also highlighted the economic benefits generated by the series, saying communities across the country would benefit from the increased activity surrounding the matches.

He added that SA Rugby had taken note of feedback from supporters and would use it to improve future editions of the rivalry.

“We value your voice and we will implement these insights to ensure that every edition of this series continues to grow in excellence,” Alexander said.

Springboks draw strength from supporters

Alexander also paid tribute to the Springboks and their supporters, saying the team’s performances were fuelled by the passion of the South African public.

“Our players draw immense strength from your unwavering support,” he said.

“Your passion, your presence and your belief in them fuel their performance and deepen their pride in representing our nation.”

The inaugural Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series brought together two of international rugby’s most successful nations and attracted supporters from around the world.

Alexander ended his message by thanking South Africans for once again demonstrating the country’s unity and resilience.

“Thank you, South Africa, for once again showing the world who we are, united, resilient and guided by the spirit of Ubuntu.”

The fourth and final Test will take place on Saturday, 12 September in Baltimore in the United States.
