DC Officially Reveals Lex Luthor's New Design, And It's His Best So Far

The new warsuit Lex Luthor wears to fight Superman and other DC powerhouses is the most visually striking the Man of Steel's archnemesis has ever worn. Lex Luthor’s genius intellect rivals Superman’s Kryptonian might, and his inventions are meticulously engineered to sabotage Superman’s heroic efforts. Luthor’s obsession with recognition drives him to design machines and craft strategies that weaken Superman and redirect admiration and credit toward himself, regardless of whether that entails putting entire cities or the whole world in danger and leading Superman to save the day in the end anyway.

Among all of Lex Luthor’s creations, his iconic green warsuit is definitely his most effective weapon. Equipped with Kryptonite energy sources, advanced shielding, flight, and an endless list of offensive systems, Luthor's warsuit is a technological marvel that allows Luthor to play a direct role in the battlefield and trade blows with Superman. The warsuit's symbolism is also clear, as it's often an oversized suit of armor that makes Luthor look tiny inside. Still, Lex Luthor has mastered it to the point that in comic book events such as DC K.O., it's Superman's nemesis who overshadows the entire Justice League and all their villains, winning the Omega King Tournament.

Eighty-six years after his comic book introduction and forty-eight years after his first-ever blockbuster movie appearance, Lex Luthor is finally wearing his green warsuit on the big screen in James Gunn's upcoming Man of Tomorrow. Before that, Luthor puts a completely different version of his armor to work in a different universe.

Lex Luthor's Sorcerer Armor Allows Him To Overpower Captain Atom

Jor-El fights Lex Luthor in Superman Father of Tomorrow #5 cover

Jor-El has revolutionized the world with his Krypton-inspired technology in Superman: Father of Tomorrow, and he's been lucky enough to not have Lex Luthor interfering. However, Lex Luthor has avoided confronting the Father of Tomorrow directly all these years because he's been studying magic to become the Earth's most powerful sorcerer. Luthor kills influential figures such as Zatanna, Jason Blood, and Madame Xanadu before murdering Doctor Fate and stealing his helmet. In Superman: Father of Tomorrow #5, Luthor arrives to kill Captain Atom wearing an intricately-designed, form-fitting suit of armor and wielding Doctor Fate's helmet in the shape of a sword.

Lex Luthor's sorcerer warsuit is a beautifully detailed suit of armor with a shiny green-and-purple palette and gold finishes, made up of dozens of singular metal plates interwoven to give Luthor maximum flexibility. Luthor also wears a dark purple cape and a cloak attached to the suit with golden brooches, each sporting a cross at the center. After it's transformed into a sword, Doctor Fate's helmet retains its eyeholes at the center. Luthor's sorcerer design in Superman: Father of Tomorrow bears a certain resemblance to Zack Snyder's Steppenwolf and Darkseid designs, as well as Marvel's Doctor Doom armor.

Father Of Tomorrow's Sorcerer Lex Luthor Would Be Unstoppable In Other Universes

Kal-El Is Lucky Lex Luthor Isn't All That Interested In Magic

Sorcerer Lex Luthor wields Doctor Fate's helmet as a sword in Superman Father of Tomorrow #4

Lex Luthor’s main limitation in mainstream DC continuity is his refusal to acknowledge forces he can't personally control. However, in the rare occasion where he combines his scientific intellect to the infinite potential of the occult, Luthor eliminates his only blind spot. Superman: Father of Tomorrow's "Hex" Luthor doesn't need to rely on the technology designed by Jor-El, or even his own, to fight and defeat opponents as powerful as Doctor Fate and Captain Atom, both of which could overpower Luthor and Superman himself on Earth-0 and other major DC timelines.

Aside from Green Kryptonite, Superman's most glaring weakness in DC lore is magic, a force against which his Kryptonian physiology has no natural defense. If Lex Luthor threw away his pride and genuinely dedicated his billions and his multidisciplinary genius to mastering the dark arts, Superman would stand virtually no chance. The future doesn't bode well for Superman: Father of Tomorrow's Jor-El, who may end up having to sacrifice his life to save his adoptive world. Meanwhile, Jor-El's son doesn't have to worry about Luthor's magical prowess in most other universes, to the benefit of the Earth.

Would you like to see Earth-0's Lex Luthor become a sorcerer?

Superman: Father of Tomorrow #5 is available September 30 from DC Comics
