Two people have been killed in separate incidents involving alleged arson and stabbing in Jigawa State, with the police arresting two suspects in connection with the cases.

The Jigawa State Police Command said it arrested the suspects for alleged mischief by fire, culpable homicide, and grievous hurt in the Gwaram and Dutse Local Government Areas of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, confirmed the incidents in a statement made available to journalists in Dutse on Wednesday.

Adam said the first incident occurred on September 29, 2026, at about 11:30pm when one Abbas Ibrahim, 27, of Nassarawa village, Gwaram LGA, allegedly entered the residence of his elder brother, Basiru Shuaibu, 25, by jumping over the fence.

According to the PPRO, the suspect, who claimed to be of unsound mind, allegedly poured petrol inside his brother’s room and set it ablaze.

The fire reportedly left Basiru and his wife with serious burns.

“They were subsequently taken by their relatives to a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment. Unfortunately, Basiru Shuaibu succumbed to the injuries and died while receiving treatment,” Adam said.

He said police operatives subsequently commenced investigation and arrested Ibrahim in Sara town, Gwaram LGA.

Adam added that the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse was investigating the case and that the suspect had since been arraigned in court for prosecution.

In a separate incident, the PPRO said a 20-year-old man, Lawisi Safiyanu, of Chamo village, allegedly stabbed a 25-year-old man, Muhammad Abba, in Dutse LGA on October 1, 2026, following a disagreement over a N500 balance.

He explained that Abba had bought a mobile handset from Safiyanu for N1,500, paid N1,000 and was left with a balance of N500.

“During the ensuing disagreement over the outstanding N500, the suspect allegedly used a knife to stab him,” the PPRO said.

According to him, the victim was rushed to the Rashid Shekoni Teaching Hospital, Dutse, where he died while receiving treatment.

Adam said the suspect was arrested and the exhibit connected to the case was recovered.

He stated that investigation into the incident had been completed and the suspect charged to court, adding that “the suspect will face the full weight of the law.”

Adam said the command remained committed to taking firm and decisive action against criminal conduct.

He assured residents that the police would ensure that offenders were brought before the law to serve as a deterrent to others.

The PPRO further said the Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, had urged residents to remain calm.

He quoted the CP as urging members of the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands.

The CP also advised residents to promptly report suspicious activities, threats and disputes to the police or other relevant security agencies.

Recall that on Tuesday, the Enugu State Police Command arrested five persons in three separate operations for allegedly vandalising and stealing public infrastructure in the state.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed that operatives of the New Haven Police Division, acting on a tip-off, arrested two men, Wisdom Nuhu and Moses Jonathan, at a scrap dump in New Artisan Market, Enugu.https://punchng.com/police-arrest-five-over-enugu-infrastructure-vandalism/
