Official Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Game Is Perfect For Fans Frank Miller's Classic

Batman has endured for decades with little resistance, though the character has evolved quite a bit since his original appearance in the Detective Comics line. Just like the '60s TV show with Adam West cemented a version of the character for a blip in time, Frank Miller's grittier The Dark Knight Returns informed how many people see and write Batman.

In turn, even that would change over time, but we see the DNA of The Dark Knight Returns in nearly every modern adaptation, including the Christopher Nolan trilogy. Based on Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, there's a full board game adaptation from Cryptozoic Entertainment out now. Originally released in 2022 and made possible through crowdfunding, the Deluxe Edition is now widely available and aims to retell The Dark Knight Returns.

This is the type of experience you can expect from the game: "As Batman, you must come out of retirement and do everything you can to beat back a relentless tide of ruthless mutants, cops, and press looking to bring you down. Get ready to face villains like Two-Face, The Joker, and the leader of the Mutant Gang… as well as your powerful former ally, Superman! The game is played over the course of four epic “Books,” with the results of each carrying over to the next. Each Book features unique rules, allies, abilities, and epic boss battles. You can also play each Book standalone, with setup instructions for easy, normal, and hard modes. There’s even a VS Mode that lets one player take control of Batman’s enemies."

Thankfully, there are plenty of concessions for beginners and tabletop veterans, with multiple difficulty modes in tow (easy, normal, hard). Although the game is solo-centric, there is an additional Versus mode, which pits one person as Batman against another person taking control of the Rogue's Gallery of villains. Four guidebooks will serve as stories for each session.

The Deluxe Edition is available from the game's official site and features minis sculpted by Arnaud Boudoiron, plus variable setups and scenarios, and the ability to play as Batman with help from Commissioner Gordon, Green Arrow, and Robin [Carrie Kelly]. Like the source material, villains include The Joker, Two-Face, Superman, and the Mutant Gang.

Batman is back, but did he ever really leave? Other than Spider-Man, he's one of the most iconic and best-selling superheroes of all time, so we can expect many more adaptations of subseries like The Dark Knight Returns for the foreseeable future.
