Battlestar Galactica has always been defined as much by the people commanding its ships as by the Cylons relentlessly pursuing them. William Adama remains the franchise's most iconic military leader, guiding the Galactica and the remnants of humanity through impossible circumstances while gradually rising from commander to admiral. Lee "Apollo" Adama also became an important leader in his own right, while figures such as Helena Cain took her own unique approach to survival.
Those captains, commanders, and admirals helped shape some of Battlestar Galactica's biggest conflicts, with every major decision carrying consequences for both individual crews and humanity as a whole. Leadership has therefore remained one of the franchise's defining themes across its different releases. However, this brand-new Battlestar Galactica release puts an entirely new captain at the helm and shakes up the formula entirely.
Battlestar Galactica Gets A New Captain In Scattered Hopes
Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes puts a new captain in the hot seat, but it does so without removing Admiral Adama from the equation entirely. Rather than taking control of Adama or another familiar officer, players become an unnamed Gunstar Captain leading a fleet of survivors in the aftermath of the Twelve Colonies' destruction. Adama has called for the scattered survivors to reunite with the Galactica, making reaching humanity's famous Battlestar the ultimate objective as oposed to actually commanding it yourself.
Developer Alt Shift turns that responsibility into a survival-focused tactical roguelite. Between Cylon attacks, players have a limited number of turns to manage their fleet, dispatch expeditions for resources, allocate personnel and supplies, upgrade ships, and train crew members. Those decisions affect areas including healthcare, maintenance, and faction politics, potentially triggering everything from equipment failures and epidemics to internal conflict. There is even the possibility of discovering a Cylon infiltrator among the survivors.
Combat shifts into real-time tactical battles in which simply surviving long enough to make an FTL jump is often the goal. Players command squadrons, deploy their Gunstar's weapons, and can pause the action to plan attacks and anticipate enemy movement. Four different starting Gunstar fleets can eventually be unlocked, including vessels specializing in areas such as squadron management, electronic warfare, and long-range bombardment.
It effectively lets fans experience the enormous burden traditionally associated with Battlestar Galactica’s commanders firsthand, except this time they are the captain of their own vessel making the impossible calls.
Scattered Hopes Is The Closest We've Got To A Reboot
Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes isn't technically a reboot, but it may be the closest the franchise has come to one in years. While it doesn't continue the story of Adama, Starbuck, Apollo, and the other familiar faces from the 2004 series, the game returns to its defining premise and effectively starts over from another corner of the same universe.
Once again, the Twelve Colonies have fallen, the Cylons are hunting humanity's survivors, and a desperate fleet is trying to stay alive long enough to reach safety. The difference is that players experience those events through a previously unseen Gunstar captain and their crew. Adama and the Galactica still exist, but they're the destination rather than the center of the story. Each roguelite run becomes its own miniature version of Battlestar Galactica where you deal with crises and potential Cylon infiltrators and make brutal command decisions while the enemy closes in.
Sadly, recent attempts to bring Battlestar Galactica back to television have yet to produce another series. A new project developed for Peacock beginning in 2019 was dropped by the streamer in 2024 before receiving a series order, although UCP reportedly intended to shop it elsewhere.
Scattered Hopes accomplishes something close to a reboot without actually rewriting established continuity, and it's the closest we're going to get anytime soon it seems. It takes the basic ingredients that made the modern Battlestar Galactica work, introduces a new captain and fleet, and asks players to experience humanity's darkest days all over again.
