Simpsons Hit & Run Remastered Is Available Now

The Simpsons is one of the biggest media franchises in the world, branching out a long way from the original series that so many of us fell in love with in the 80s and 90s. For a while, the world of video games was no exception to that rule, as developers brought us a bunch of releases tied to the iconic IP.

Even better than that, most were pretty fun to play as well, which, as we know, is absolutely no guarantee for games linked directly to a movie or TV show. The very best of the bunch for many (with an honorable mention for Road Rage) was The Simpsons: Hit & Run, a game that's just as fun to play today, more than two decades on from its original release.

If you do fancy immersing yourself in some nostalgia this week, there's a mod for the game that you should absolutely consider using, as it updates the games visuals significantly, to a much more acceptable standard for a player in 2026.

Over on the ModDB website, you should be able to find the download page for The Simpsons Hit & Run Remastered — Definitive Edition, a free visual update for the 2003 release that changes many of the game's graphical traits, while retaining the essence of the art that makes it so appealing in the first place.

In announcing the mod's release this month, the author shared a brief statement about their intentions for the download:

"Hey everyone, it's out! Hit & Run Remastered — Definitive Edition is ready to download and play for free with your own PC copy. I've been looking forward to letting you loose in this version of Springfield.

"The part I care most about is the textures. I extracted them, improved them with several models, and compared each original against several HD candidates. Then I picked the one that felt right, one by one: around 3,700 textures. A sharper result was only worth keeping if it still felt like Hit & Run. I'm really happy with how it turned out. The familiar missions, controls, cameras and progression are still there; the visual work is what you come back to discover."

The full list of included features in the mod is as follows:

• Remastered textures: around 3,700 textures compared against the originals and selected one by one, keeping Springfield's cartoon identity.
• Modern Mode: mipmaps, anisotropic and trilinear filtering for distant roads and surfaces.
• Faithful ReShade: a gentle colour finish and reduced sky banding.
• Optional DLSS 5 Feeder: an external neural pass that may change lighting, colour and detail. NVIDIA RTX required, aimed at RTX 50 and tested on RTX 5070 Ti.

As with all mods on the website, it's entirely free to download, so there really is no risk to giving it a try for yourself. You will obviously need a copy of the original game for the PC, though digital versions are available online if you have a disc version at home.

Outside of that, there's plenty of fun to look forward to if you're a fan of The Simpsons. As well as the show pressing on without signs of stopping, there's another movie on the way in September 2027, officially and hilariously titled The New Simpsons Movie.
