Dussehra celebrates the victory of good over evil, commemorating Lord Ram’s triumph over the demon king Ravana. Taking inspiration from this timeless theme, several South Indian films have explored the battle between good and evil through stories and memorable characters.

On the occasion of Dussehra, let’s take a look at South Indian films that capture the spirit of the festival.Multiple films have this theme through rural revenge dramas, mythological adventures and superhero stories.

The film is set in a coal-mining village in Telangana, the film follows a gritty story of friendship, betrayal and revenge.Nani plays Dharani, who finds himself confronting powerful people and corruption in his village. The film builds towards a dramatic climax during the Ravana Dahanam celebrations, when the burning of Ravana’s effigy becomes a powerful symbol of good triumphing over evil.

‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’

Directed by S.S. Rajamouli, ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ presents the battle between the heroic Amarendra Baahubali and the tyrannical Bhallaladeva on a grand scale.

Starring Prabhas in the lead role, the film explores sacrifice, loyalty, justice and the struggle to reclaim a kingdom from an oppressive ruler. Its large-scale action sequences and clear conflict between the protagonist and antagonist give the story the grandeur of a mythological epic. The film’s core message of standing up against injustice makes it a fitting choice for a Dussehra watchlist.

‘HanuMan’

Prasanth Varma’s 2024 ‘HanuMan’ starring Teja Sajja includes Indian mythology with the superhero genre.

The film follows an ordinary young man who unexpectedly gains extraordinary powers connected to Lord Hanuman.Teja Sajja’s character discovers his abilities, he must confront a ruthless antagonist who wants to use supernatural power for personal gain. The story brings together faith, courage and the responsibility that comes with power.

‘Minnal Murali’

The Malayalam superhero film ‘Minnal Murali’ has a grounded take on the battle between good and evil. Directed by Basil Joseph, the film stars Tovino Thomas who is an ordinary man who gains superpowers after being struck by lightning. As he learns to understand his abilities, he faces an antagonist whose own transformation leads him down a destructive path. The film also shows how people respond differently to power and personal struggles.

The idea places the responsibility of protecting the community on the hero, reinforcing the idea that courage and compassion can overcome darkness.
