Transportation Day as moment to renew safety commitment: Minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi says the commemoration of National Transportation Day (Harhubnas) 2026 is a moment to evaluate transportation services and renew the sector's commitment to providing safe, reliable, and secure services to the public.

"Building Indonesia's transportation sector is no easy task. It requires us to continuously strengthen safety, expand connectivity between regions, and create a reliable and sustainable transportation system," Purwagandhi said.

He made the statement while leading the 2026 National Transportation Day ceremony here on Thursday.

According to him, public expectations for reliable and safe transportation services continue to rise, meaning Harhubnas must not remain merely an annual ceremony but must serve as a moment to evaluate services and renew the sector's commitment to the public.

He expressed concern over the various transportation accidents that have occurred in recent times, saying these incidents serve as a reminder to transportation workers of one fundamental principle, namely safety.

"On behalf of myself and the entire Transportation Ministry family, I once again extend my deepest condolences to the victims and their bereaved families," he added.

He stressed that in transportation, safety must never become a mere administrative routine within the systems that have been built and monitored.

"Safety is a moral responsibility. More than that, safety is the pride of every transportation worker," the minister stressed.

He said transportation workers must, therefore, be willing to halt operations when conditions are unsafe and must quickly find alternatives so that public mobility and aid distribution are not disrupted.

The minister also explained that transportation cannot be viewed merely as a matter of vehicles and infrastructure, noting that President Prabowo Subianto has stressed the importance of connectivity between production centers and residential areas to lower transportation and logistics costs and expand equitable development.

"National Transportation Day 2026 carries the theme 'Connecting Indonesia for a More Advanced Future,'" the minister stated.

He said this reflects transportation's core purpose of reuniting families, opening job opportunities, delivering food supplies, driving industry, and extending the state's presence to the frontier, outermost, and remote regions.
