Mohun Bagan Super Giant will begin its IFA Shield 2026 campaign on home turf on Wednesday, taking on Sreenidi Deccan FC in the Group B opener at the Mohun Bagan Ground.

For the Mariners, the Shield presents an early chance to find their rhythm and build momentum before the season gathers pace. Sreenidi Deccan, meanwhile, will arrive with no fear of Kolkata’s giants, having crossed paths with them in knockout football before, and will look to unsettle Bagan on its own patch.
The IFA Shield has long been intertwined with Kolkata’s footballing identity. Since Independence, Mohun Bagan and its great rival East Bengal have dominated the competition, winning it 21 and 29 times respectively.
The last edition ended in another chapter of that rivalry, with Bagan beating East Bengal 5-4 on penalties.
The two Kolkata giants have been kept apart in the group stage this year. If both make it through, however, the Shield could once again bring them face to face, this time with a knockout place at stake.
