Councils approve €200m redevelopment of Napoli’s Maradona Stadium for EURO 2032

The city council in Naples has agreed to provide €50m in funding for the redevelopment of Napoli’s Stadio Maradona ahead of EURO 2032, which brings the total funds of the project up to the €200m mark. 

The Stadio Maradona and the city of Naples are among the longlist of stadia and cities competing to host matches at the EURO 2032 tournament, which will be co-hosted by Italy and Turkey. 

Like many stadiums in Italy, the 54,732-capacity Stadio Maradona is in need of restoration if it is to be deemed eligible to host matches at EURO 2032. 

Whilst plans for brand new stadiums are underway in Milan and Rome, authorities in the south of Italy plan to renovate the Stadio Maradona rather than knock it down and start from scratch. 

Bringing the Stadio Maradona up to the required standards for it to host games at EURO 2032 is expected to come at a cost of €200m. This will be largely publicly-funded given that the stadium is owned by the city council and not by Napoli itself. 

According to the latest updates from news agency ANSA, the city council in Naples, led by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, has authorised the investment of €50m of municipal funds to go towards the redevelopment of the Stadio Maradona. This is on top of the €150m that has been allocated by the regional council of Campania.
