‘Point Break’ Series Surfs to Green Light at AMC
AMC and sibling streamer AMC+ have greenlit a series based on Point Break, the 1991 surfing-and-bank-robbing action thriller directed by Kathryn Bigelow and starring Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves. Alcon Television Group is the lead studio on the show, with AMC Studios and StudioCanal as co-producers. (Alcon owns rights to Point Break and produced a 2015 movie remake.)
Dave Kalstein (NCIS: Los Angeles, Treadstone) and Christopher C. Rogers (Sugar, AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire) will be co-showrunners on the series, which is set in the same world as the original film. The series will air on AMC and stream on AMC+ in the U.S. and Canada, with StudioCanal handling worldwide sales. Production is set to begin in early 2027; no casting has been announced yet.
“Start with one of the most entertaining and unforgettable action films ever made, add a powerhouse creative team and producing partners, massive fan interest that has been clear from the moment we announced the series was in development and you get a greenlight we could not be more excited about,” said Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios. “Dave Kalstein and Chris Rogers have created a story and characters that honor the legacy of the film and will bring a new generation of Ex-Presidents to the world.”
AMC has had Point Break in development since late last year, and McDermott noted at the company’s upfront in late April that he was “pushing really fast” toward a series pickup.
Said Kalstein and Rogers in a statement, “Point Break was the movie that rocked our worlds forever. It was this wild cinematic sermon on friendship, outlaws, and spirituality that struck our souls. As we got older, we realized it hit millions of people the same way. Point Break is more than just a movie—it’s a way of looking at the world. We are so honored to be carrying this legacy forward with Alcon, AMC, and StudioCanal. We’re putting together a series that will inspire audiences everywhere to seek The Ultimate.”
The logline for Point Break reads, “More than three decades after the events of the original Point Break film, a new heist crew inspired by the Ex-Presidents has emerged, and the FBI must rely on a mysterious ex-pro surfer with a checkered past to infiltrate them.”
Kalstein and Rogers will exeutive produce with Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Alcon TV Group head of television Ben Roberts and Julia Cohen. Steven Johnson, Diego Piasek and Gene Hong are co-EPs, and Emily Yoshida and Ben Cook are supervising producers.
“We’re excited to see Point Break move into production with AMC,” said Alcon’s Kosove and Johnson. “Dave and Chris have a strong vision for the series and a clear understanding of what makes this world so compelling. We’re looking forward to working closely with AMC and the creative team to bring this series to audiences.”
