Sabrina Carpenter lands first movie role in 4 years as she joins Tom Holland's next film

Two big names have been added to Tom Holland's upcoming biopic movie about film star and dancer Fred Astaire, including chart-dominating popstar Sabrina Carpenter in her first film role in four years.

Deadline reports that the 'Manchild' singer, whose last film role was in 2022's Tall Girl 2, will be playing Ginger Rogers in the currently-untitled project.

Also announced is The Substance actor Margaret Qualley, who will be playing Adele Astaire.

The film will tell the story of how Fred and Adele became major stars on the stage, before Fred went on to become a major Hollywood star as part of a duo with Ginger.

This has been a passion project for Holland, who trained as a dancer at a young age and led the cast of Billy Elliot on stage before moving into films himself.

As well as the trio of famous stars currently announced, the film has a major name behind the camera.

It's being directed by Paul King, who helmed both Paddington and Paddington 2 as well as 2023's Wonka with Timothée Chalamet.

Amy Pascal, who worked with Holland on the MCU Spider-Man films and is now overseeing the James Bond franchise with David Heyman, is serving as producer.

King said: "I am thrilled and honored to have been entrusted with telling the story of Fred Astaire and his original dance partner – his big sister Adele – to the big screen.

"Fred left a timeless legacy of dance on film, most famously in his collaborations with Ginger Rogers, while Adele's work has been lost to history; indeed, no footage of her dancing survives.

"The cinematic challenge of bringing to life these icons of the 20th century is one that I could not imagine without Tom Holland, Margaret Qualley and Sabrina Carpenter by my side."

The script for the project is based on the book The Astaires: Fred & Adele by Kathleen Riley, who serves as consultant, while Fred's daughter Ava Astaire McKenzie has lent her support.

The Fred Astaire biopic doesn't currently have a release date.
