Charles Kelley did not expect a couple of broken ribs to lead to a cancer diagnosis. The Lady A singer, 45, revealed recently that he has multiple myeloma, a rare type of blood cancer.

Sitting beside his wife, Cassie Kelley, in a video shared on her Instagram account, the singer explained that doctors started looking more closely at his health after he suffered “a couple random rib fractures.”Those injuries led to several blood tests. One of them eventually gave Kelley an answer he was not expecting. “One of the last blood tests we did, they found a blood cancer in there called multiple myeloma,” he said.

The news came as a shock, but Kelley was noticeably focused on what comes next rather than letting the diagnosis take over the conversation. He said he feels healthy and is hopeful about treatment, pointing to how much multiple myeloma care has changed in recent years.

What is multiple myeloma?

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that begins in plasma cells, a type of white blood cell found in the bone marrow. These cells usually produce antibodies that help the body fight infections.

When a person has multiple myeloma, abnormal plasma cells can accumulate in the bone marrow and outnumber the healthy cells that produce red blood cells, platelets and other white blood cells, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. The disease can affect the bones, too. It can cause bone pain or bones that break more easily but an unexplained rib fracture does not mean that someone has multiple myeloma. The condition can also be associated with anaemia, infections, kidney problems and high calcium levels. Some people may have few symptoms when the disease is first detected.

Charles Kelley feels hopeful about cancer treatment

Despite the difficult news, Charles Kelley has repeatedly returned to one word: hopeful. “I feel really hopeful, I really do,” he said in the September 29 Instagram video. He also said the treatments for multiple myeloma have “just come so far” over the past five years.

A friend who was diagnosed with the same disease a couple of months before Kelley has also been helping him understand what the journey could look like. That personal connection appears to have made the diagnosis feel a little less unfamiliar. Charles Kelley also compared his approach to cancer with the way he previously handled his sobriety journey. He has been open about his struggle with alcohol addiction and marked four years of sobriety in 2026.“In the same spirit of the way we've shared a lot of my sobriety journey just getting this stuff off your chest is so freeing and it takes the power away from it a little bit,” he said.

Charles Kelley plans to keep making music during treatment

For Lady A fans, there is one thing Charles Kelley does not appear ready to put on pause: music. The singer said the band has a new record coming soon and that he expects the first six months of his treatment to be manageable enough for him to continue working.“I can still work,” Kelley said. He acknowledged that there will be difficult days but added that he wants to keep going. Lady A's official tour schedule lists the band's 'This Winter's Night Tour' from December 10 through December 21, 2026. The group will perform in Northfield, Gary, Shipshewana, New York, Bensalem and Greensboro before ending the run with two December 21 shows at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. For Kelley, staying involved with music is not just about keeping a tour date on the calendar.

It is also about holding on to something familiar while life changes around him.

A new chapter for the Lady A singer

Charles Kelley ended his announcement with the same outlook that ran through the entire conversation. He knows treatment will bring difficult moments, but he does not want to spend all his time thinking about the illness. He and Cassie chose to share the news with fans themselves, just as Kelley has done with other deeply personal parts of his life.“I’m hopeful. I really am,” he said. “We just wanted to let y’all know.”For now, Charles Kelley is looking ahead to treatment, his family, a new Lady A record and the Christmas shows already waiting on the calendar. It is a difficult new chapter, but Kelley seems determined to keep some of his old routine intact — one day, one song and one performance at a time.
