Battle of the Smart Rings: Oura Sues Ultrahuman for Patent Infringement — Again

Translate

The legal battle between Oura, maker of the Oura Ring, and Ultrahuman, maker of the Ultrahuman Ring Pro, continues. On Friday, Oura announced in a blog post that it filed a new patent infringement lawsuit against Ultrahuman in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. Oura said that the Ultrahuman Ring Pro infringed on its design and utility patents.

The complaint seeks monetary compensation and a permanent stop to Ultrahuman’s sale of its ring. It also names SVTronics, the Texas-based manufacturer of the Ring Pro, as a defendant.

But this isn’t the first time Oura has sued Ultrahuman or other smart ring makers.

Oura’s smart ring legal battles

Oura sued Ultrahuman in Texas in 2023 for patent infringement over the company’s ring, then the Ring Air. In March 2024, Oura filed a patent infringement complaint with the US International Trade Commission against Ultrahuman, RingConn and Circular. Ten months later, the company filed another ITC complaint targeting Samsung’s Galaxy Ring, the Reebok Smart Ring, Zepp Health’s Amazfit Helio Ring, and Nexxbase’s Luna Ring.

This comes after Samsung preemptively sued Oura in May 2024 to prevent Oura from suing Samsung over patent infringement. As of July, the legal battle continues with a split outcome.

In August 2025, the ITC ruled against Ultrahuman and RingConn for patent infringement. While Oura, RingConn and Circular reached settlements and patent license agreements, Ultrahuman’s Ring Air was banned in the US.

In the meantime, Ultrahuman began working on its Ring Pro, unveiling the device and launching global sales in February while awaiting US Customs and Border Protection clearance. That approval came the following month.

However, Oura said that the previous US Customs clearance didn’t cover the two patents in its latest filing. One of those design patents was issued only two days before Oura’s filing.

Ultrahuman’s response

Ultrahuman remains confident in its Ring Pro and the innovation behind it, an Ultrahuman spokesperson told CNET in an email. As the court hasn’t yet ruled on Oura’s latest complaint, the company will continue to manufacture and sell the Ring Pro.

“We will address Oura’s newly asserted claims through the appropriate legal process and will defend our position vigorously,” the spokesperson said. “Competition and intellectual property disputes are a natural part of building an important new technology category. They do not change our ambition or our pace.”

An Oura representative didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
