Maigret reboot gets release window confirmed for seasons 1 and 2

Translate

UKTV has confirmed when its reimagining of Georges Simenon's Chief Inspector Jules Maigret will reach UK screens, with season 1 arriving this December and season 2 following in 2027.

The adaptation, which first revealed Benjamin Wainwright in the title role last year, has already aired on PBS Masterpiece in the US, where its second six-episode season kicked off this month.

So, it's good news then that UK fans won't have too long to wait until they can join in on the action.

The news comes as the broadcaster has acquired UK premiere rights to both runs of the new Maigret for its free streaming service U and linear channel U&Drama, as part of a wider 114-hour content deal with Banijay Rights.

Produced by Playground, the series reinvents one of crime fiction's most recognisable detectives for a modern audience.

Wainwright, who appeared in World on Fire, leads the cast as Chief Inspector Jules Maigret, with Stefanie Martini, best known as the young Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect 1973, playing Madame Louise Maigret. The Inbetweeners star Blake Harrison also plays Joseph Torrence.

The adaptation is created for television and written by Homeland's Patrick Harbinson, who also directs alongside Faye Gilbert and David Evans.

According to UKTV, season 1 follows Maigret and his team of maverick but loyal detectives, Les Maigrets, as they solve a series of complex crimes in Paris.

His unconventional methods and unique sense of justice put him at odds with his superiors and the judicial system he is supposed to represent, while he outwits some of the city's most cunning and violent criminals and confronts his own troubled past.

Karin Marelle, global head of acquisitions at UKTV and BBC Studios, said of the acquisition news: "Maigret is one of the most recognisable detective brands in the world, so we are delighted to be bringing this brand-new adaptation to viewers on U and U&Drama."

It's not the first time Simenon's detective has come to the small screen, with Rupert Davies, Richard Harris, Michael Gambon and Rowan Atkinson all playing Maigret in previous adaptations.
