Starting back in 1999, the Super Smash Bros. franchise has been a cornerstone of the gaming sphere. Published by Nintendo, the platform fighting game allowed the studio to combine some of its most iconic characters into one setting, and, as such, it sees familiar faces from the likes of Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Kirby, and Pokémon as they come together in epic brawls.
From the Nintendo 64 all the way to the more recent Nintendo Switch, the Super Smash Bros. franchise now consists of six mainline entries, with the most recently, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launched back in 2018.
Here at Screen Rant, we proclaimed that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was "everything we've ever wanted" in our review, writing:
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lives up to its name and has almost everything: all the fighters, all the music, all the stages. It has Spirits, if players decide to care about this new addition, but we'd trade it for a modern online multiplayer infrastructure. There has never been a better game to play with friends on the Switch. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate might just be among the best games to play with friends, period.
Now, almost a decade on, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which was currently only available on the Nintendo Switch, has now finally made its way to PC. Of course, Nintendo is not involved in this decision, but thanks to fans, the highly rated fighting game is now accessible to a whole new legion of players.
With Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee. already having unofficial PC ports, it seems as though Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has finally received its turn, and earlier this month, the project was made available. So, what does this PC port include?
As well as 60FPS support and resolutions up to 4K, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. for PC also includes the ability to play with a keyboard or an XInput gamepad, built-in shaders, and even an online/multiplayer mode, which is definitely a big plus.
The PC port, titled WindowSmash, hosts online play by relaying the game’s Local Wireless traffic over the internet, with one player being able to host the game, whilst another joins. The only requirement is that both players will need the same game version and port installed, but other than that, they are good to go. However, it is also worth noting that it is still early days for this port, and so there may still be some hiccups along the way.
Nevertheless, WindowSmash can be downloaded with this link and so, if you want to dive into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on PC for the first time, now is the best chance you will get. It may have been almost a decade, but it seems as though the wait has definitely been worth it, and it spells good news for any future Nintendo Switch exclusive titles when it comes to those highly requested PC ports. All I can say now is, happy smashing!
