Neil Patrick Harris, Julianne Hough, Austin Scott to Return to Broadway in ‘Damn Yankees’

A revival of Damn Yankees is coming to Broadway starring Neil Patrick Harris, Julianne Hough and Austin Scott.

Harris, a Tony Award winner for Hedwig and the Angry Inch, will star as Applegate, alongside Emmy Award winner Julianne Hough (Dancing With the Stars) as Lola, marking her first Broadway musical after she appeared in POTUS on Broadway in 2022. Scott (Hamilton) will play Young Joe. Further casting will be announced at a later date.

The new adaptation features a book by Will Power and Doug Wright, with additional lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and direction and choreography by Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo. This is the first Broadway revival of Damn Yankees in more than 30 years. Major League Baseball and its production label MLB Studios will serve as a partner on the production.

The musical originally premiered in 1955 with a book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop, and music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross and direction by Abbott. Bob Fosse choreographed the show, with Gwen Verdon starring as Lola.

The story has been updated to the early 2000s, where diehard baseball fan Joe Boyd dreams of his team, the Baltimore Orioles, which has been on downswing, returning to glory. So when a charming stranger and his accomplice arrive with an offer, Boyd makes a high-stakes deal for himself and his team.

It comes to New York after an out-of-town run at Arena Stage in Washington D.C. Lia Vollack (MJ), Haley Swindal, granddaughter of New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, and Julie Boardman are producing the musical for Broadway.

The musical will play the Marquis Theatre with its first preview on March 24, 2027 and an official opening April 20.
