Northeast monsoon: Let us strive towards zero flood-related fatalities

Translate

LETTERS: As we enter the Northeast Monsoon season, I wish to call on all relevant authorities, disaster management agencies and communities to make ZERO FLOOD-RELATED FATALITIES our collective target and commitment.

While heavy rainfall and flooding may be unavoidable in certain circumstances, the loss of human lives should never be accepted as inevitable. We must strive to ensure zero drownings, zero preventable deaths and zero avoidable tragedies throughout this monsoon season.

Achieving this target requires a high level of preparedness, vigilance and coordination among all relevant agencies. Preparedness must be proactive rather than reactive.

Authorities must ensure that flood-prone areas are identified, drainage systems are properly maintained, evacuation centres are ready, emergency supplies are sufficient, and rescue personnel and equipment can be mobilised without delay.

Effective coordination among Nadma, the Fire and Rescue Department, police, local authorities and other relevant agencies is crucial. Early-warning systems must be strengthened, flood warnings communicated promptly, and evacuation operations carried out without hesitation whenever necessary.

Equally important is the safety and personal responsibility of the public. I wish to remind everyone:

1. Never attempt to walk, ride or drive through floodwaters, as even seemingly shallow water can be extremely dangerous.

2. Stay away from rivers, streams and waterways during heavy rainfall, as water levels and currents can change rapidly.

3. Follow evacuation instructions immediately and do not take unnecessary risks to protect property or belongings.

4. Give special attention and assistance to senior citizens, children, persons with disabilities and vulnerable individuals living in flood-prone areas.

5. Keep emergency supplies, essential medication, drinking water, flashlights and important documents ready.

6. Stay updated through official weather forecasts, flood warnings and announcements from the authorities.

We must recognise that flood preparedness is not solely the responsibility of the government and emergency responders. Every individual, family, community and business has a role to play in preventing unnecessary loss of life.

I therefore urge all authorities to treat zero flood-related fatalities not merely as an aspiration but as a serious operational commitment throughout this Northeast Monsoon season. This requires clear responsibilities, effective coordination, timely intervention and accountability at every level.

Let us learn from the tragedies and loss of life experienced during previous monsoon seasons and ensure that every possible preventive measure is taken.

Our message must be clear: Floods may be unavoidable, but preventable deaths must not be. Every life matters, and no effort should be spared to ensure that everyone remains safe throughout this monsoon season.
