Baznas, Unpad Alumni Group launch student hubs at grand mosque

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Zakat Agency (Baznas) and the Padjadjaran University (Unpad) Alumni Association's Zakat Collection Unit are partnering to strengthen the university's main mosque with student-focused spaces.

The initiative will establish ZCorner, ZCoffee and ZStudent Center as spaces for student activities, learning and empowerment at Padjadjaran University's Grand Mosque.

Baznas Chairman Sodik Mudjahid welcomed the partnership, saying the facilities could become spaces for learning and student-led initiatives.

“The programs are expected to provide students with information about zakat, help them understand its impact, develop social activities and generate ideas on how zakat can address community issues,” Sodik said here Friday.

The programs will also empower students, particularly zakat recipients, by involving them in managing the facilities, Sodik said.

Baznas has several flagship programs, including Baznas Microfinance Masjid, which seeks to involve mosque congregations in mosque-based economic empowerment, he said.

Sodik also praised the alumni association's Zakat Collection Unit for developing strategic programs, including educational scholarships for students in need.

He expressed hope that the partnership would expand and benefit the university community and surrounding residents.

Padjadjaran University Alumni Association Chairman and Cooperatives Minister Ferry Juliantono said cooperation among Baznas, the alumni association and the university's Islamic Economics Society could strengthen Islamic economic activities.

The partnership could also support programs benefiting Padjadjaran University while using mosques as community hubs for economic development, he said.

Mosques have potential to serve as bases for businesses and cooperatives established by congregations and mosque communities, Ferry said.

“We will encourage the establishment of business units and cooperatives at mosques. I hope Padjadjaran University's Grand Mosque can pioneer a mosque cooperative, and we will support it,” Ferry said.
