Which stadium will host 2027 Champions League final? — UEFA

Translate

Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano will host the 2027 UEFA Champions League final, with Bayern Munich’s home ground and Barcelona’s Camp Nou set to stage the competition’s showpieces in 2028 and 2029, respectively.

The 2026/27 final is scheduled for Saturday, June 5, 2027, at the Metropolitano, which will host the showpiece for the second time after Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 there in 2019.

Our correspondent on Monday retrieved from the UEFA website where it announced the 2027 venue in September.

There, it also noted that Munich and Barcelona were confirmed as hosts for the subsequent finals.

Meanwhile, PUNCH Online reports that the 2026/27 Champions League league phase is currently underway as match week three of the eight matches hold Tuesday (tomorrow) and Wednesday.

Metropolitano’s history

The stadium, which has been Atletico Madrid’s home since 2017, will mark its 10th anniversary in 2027.

According to UEFA, “The reconstructed stadium replaced the Vicente Calderón as home of three-time UEFA Europa League winners Atlético de Madrid.”

The governing body said the venue “is named in honour of the original Estadio Metropolitano – Atleti’s home until 1966.”

UEFA added that the stadium “opened to the public on 16 September 2017 when Atleti faced Málaga in La Liga; Antoine Griezmann scored the stadium’s first goal in a 1-0 home win.”

Located on Avenida Luis Aragonés in the north-east of Madrid, the stadium has a capacity of around 70,000 spectators.

UEFA said: “Built with environmental concerns in mind, the stadium’s LED lighting and solar panels reduce energy consumption, while recycled rainwater irrigates the pitch. The stadium was the first 100% LED stadium in the world.”

The venue is also among those shortlisted to host matches at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

“The venue has also hosted rugby union matches, the World Rugby Sevens Series Grand Final, boxing events and music concerts,” UEFA said.

The 2027 final will be Madrid’s sixth European Cup or Champions League final. The Santiago Bernabeu previously staged the finals in 1957, 1969, 1980 and 2010, with only London having hosted more.

What Champions League winners get

Beyond the trophy, the Champions League winners will secure a place in the 2027 UEFA Super Cup against the winners of the 2026/27 Europa League.

UEFA said: “The winners will also earn the right to play against the winners of the 2026/27 UEFA Europa League in the 2027 UEFA Super Cup.”

The champions will also receive an automatic place in the league phase of the 2027/28 Champions League if they have not qualified through their domestic competition.

Estadio Metropolitano

“The UEFA Champions League trophy stands 73.5cm tall and weighs 7.5kg,” UEFA said.

The trophy’s creator, Jürg Stadelmann, said: “Everybody in football is keen to get their hands on it.”

Bayern’s Munich stadium to host 2028 final

The Munich Football Arena, home to Bayern Munich and commonly known as the Allianz Arena, will host the 2028 Champions League final.

UEFA said the stadium previously hosted the final in 2012 and 2025. It also staged six matches at Euro 2024 and the 2025 UEFA Nations League final.

Barcelona’s Camp Nou gets 2029 final

Barcelona’s Camp Nou has been selected to host the 2029 final, marking its third time staging the European Cup or Champions League showpiece.

The stadium previously hosted the finals in 1989 and 1999. AC Milan defeated Steaua Bucharest 4-0 in the 1989 final, while Manchester United beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in 1999.

The three venues will host the Champions League final in successive seasons, beginning with Madrid in June 2027.
