KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 — The government is enhancing the locally developed navigation app, TuJu, by expanding its coverage beyond highways to ordinary roads to improve traffic information and user experience, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the move followed public feedback calling for more comprehensive navigation services.

He said TuJu, created by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) under the Works Ministry in collaboration with Prosignal Consortium Sdn Bhd (PCSB), was originally designed to monitor highway traffic and provide access to closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.

“I agree with those who say the service needs further improvement, and we are looking into it.

“The app is being expanded to cover not only highways but also traffic conditions on ordinary roads.

“GovTech will work closely with relevant agencies to develop and enhance the capabilities of this local app,” he said in response to Young Syefura Othman (PH-Bentong) on the readiness and performance of local navigation apps compared with foreign alternatives.

Meanwhile, Gobind said the Waze ban applied only to civil servants conducting official government business, citing data security and legal risks.

The ban does not apply to general members of the public using the app for personal purposes, he said.

However, he stressed that civil servants were not restricted to using the TuJu app, and could continue using alternatives, including Google Maps, for official duties.

According to Gobind, Waze’s terms of service fall under Israeli legal jurisdiction, raising concerns over movement data security and potential difficulties in seeking legal recourse.

Responding to Young Syefura’s original question on GovTech’s progress, the minister said 62 services from 22 government agencies had been integrated into the MyGov Malaysia app as of Oct 8.

The app has recorded more than 3.19 million downloads and over 3.01 million active users, enabling Malaysians to access services such as paying traffic fines, replacing MyKad identity cards and checking unclaimed money online. — Bernama
