Our first horror movie recommendations for Shudder come with both recent releases and a classic from one of the biggest horror movie franchises of all time. October is the month of Halloween, when subscribers of all the many streaming services are looking for the best horror movies and TV shows to watch. This time around, multiple streamers have excellent genre releases.

Among the most noteworthy is Peacock, which saw the debut of the Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake, which stars Linda Cardellini, on October 15. That said, Shudder is the best streaming service when it comes to horror. After all, that is the streamer's bread and butter, with several new original horror releases coming to Shudder every month.

With that in mind, I decided to make our first movie list for Shudder primarily of recent original horror movies on the streaming service. That includes a creative franchise film where music plays a key role in the scares. The other is a post-apocalyptic horror movie in a confined space to up the tension.

Higher or Lower

Choose the movie with the higher Rotten Tomatoes score.

To go with those new releases, and play off on Crystal Lake's recent debut on Peacock, I felt like it would be perfect to combo those films with a classic franchise. That means Shudder subscribers have a massive slasher to look forward to this weekend on the streamer. These are the best horror movies to watch on Shudder this weekend.

3 Halloween (2018)

Starting our first Shudder list is the 2018 Halloween. This is the movie that started a new trilogy for one of the biggest horror movie franchises of all time. It also stands as the highest-grossing movie ever for the Halloween franchise with $255.5 million worldwide, as well as the best critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes for this modern chapter of the franchise. Halloween stands tall with a strong 79% RT score. Halloween is also the 2nd most-watched movie on Shudder right now.

2018's Halloween takes place 40 years after the first movie in the slasher franchise, leaving all other movies behind and working as a direct sequel to the original. Franchise star Jamie Lee Curtis is back as Laurie Strode, having to deal with Michael Myers when he manages to escape as he was being transferred to another facility. The franchise's suspense is dialed to 11, with Laurie now a capable fighter against a physically imposing and eerie Michael. This is a must-watch on Shudder for horror fans.

2 V/H/S/Mixtape (2026)

The first of the two Shudder original movies on the list is V/H/S/Mixtape, which also happens to be the most popular movie on Shudder at the time of writing. As such, if you have not yet checked out the horror movie that was released on Shudder on October 9, this weekend is the time to finally do so.

V/H/S/Mixtape is the 9th movie in the long-running V/H/S franchise. The 2026 release is a horror anthology movie that uses music and sound as sources of intense fear. The found-footage horror movie's segments traverse different concepts, including creepy animatronics, cosmic horror, and more. V/H/S/Mixtape is creative, making for a fun weekend watch on Shudder.

1 Hallowarrior (2026)

The last entry on the list is Hallowarrior, which was just released on Shudder on Friday, October 16. The new horror movie stars a major name in the genre, as Milly Shapiro previously played Charlie Graham in Ari Aster's psychological horror masterpiece Hereditary. Now, Shapiro takes center stage as Pumpkin.

The character believes herself to be the last girl on Earth in a post-apocalyptic reality where a plague has wiped out all life. Desperate for human contact on a lonely Halloween night, Pumpkin is surprised when raiders show up at her doorstep, leading to an intense battle for survival. Hallowarrior is bound to climb Shudder's charts over the weekend, and subscribers should not miss out on the new original.
