Man shot dead near Osun recreation centre

A man identified as Adejuwon Adekunle, aka Asa, has been shot dead by gunmen near a recreation centre in the Dele Yes Sir community, Osogbo, Osun State.

Adekunle was reportedly attacked between 1:30am and 2am on Tuesday by yet-to-be-identified assailants, who allegedly traced him to the area.

The circumstances surrounding the killing remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.

However, the Osun State Police Command said preliminary findings suggested that the incident might be cult-related, assuring that investigation had commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing.

The command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, who confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Tuesday, said the victim was rushed to a hospital after he was shot but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Ojelabi said, “What happened in Dele Yes Sir is suspected to be a cult-related attack. The incident occurred around 2am on Tuesday.

“We got information that some armed men went to the area and started shooting sporadically. One Adejuwon Adekunle, aka Asa, was shot and rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead on arrival. His body was deposited at the morgue.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for a more discreet investigation. We have not made any arrest regarding the incident.”

Meanwhile, the command said some persons had been invited and interrogated in connection with the killing of an Accord Party chieftain, Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, in Ile-Ife on Sunday.

Ojelabi, however, declined to disclose the identities of those invited for questioning.

He said, “No arrest has been made yet. Some persons were invited by our operatives at the Criminal Investigation Department, and they were interrogated about the incident.”

PUNCH Metro reports that the police had recovered another corpse within the precinct of the Mayfair Motor Park, Ile-Ife, bringing to two the number of persons reportedly killed in the shooting incident at the park.

The development came as the remains of Oyeyemi were interred at his newly completed residence in the Agunbelewo area of Osogbo on Monday, according to traditional rites.

PUNCH Online reports that Oyeyemi was shot dead on Sunday during a clash involving him and a group led by another leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, identified by his nickname, Sibi, at the Mayfair Motor Park.

A video circulating on social media showed Oyeyemi lying face down in a pool of blood inside a vehicle after the incident.
