An overlooked five-episode miniseries from Peacock combines the period drama of Daisy Jones & the Six with the true story of an inscrutable woman from The Dropout. Daisy Jones & the Six and The Dropout are two of the best limited series of the streaming era. While Daisy Jones & the Six is a fictionalized history of Fleetwood Mac and The Dropout is the true story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos, they're both fascinating character studies that tell a complete story in just a handful of episodes.

The Dropout and Daisy Jones & the Six are great examples of miniseries, but they also differ quite a bit. One is a true story largely centered around one of the biggest medical scams of all time and the complicated woman at its center, while the other is largely focused on the romance and interpersonal drama that permeates the music industry. Combining them would be a recipe for success, especially given Elizabeth Holmes' newfound relevancy from Nathan Fielder's You Can See Everything, though it seems quite difficult to do on the surface.

Luckily, Peacock has already proven that it can be done. Emmy Rossum's Angelyne perfectly blends the interpersonal drama of Daisy Jones & the Six with the true story and mysterious main character of The Dropout. The five-episode miniseries focuses on the rise of Angelyne, the Billboard Queen of Hollywood, and a 2017 expose published that finally revealed the real woman underneath the controversial icon. Though it earned 87% on Rotten Tomatoes and became one of Emmy Rossum's greatest performances, Angelyne went largely unappreciated back in 2022. Fortunately, that makes it the perfect show to rediscover now.

Angelyne Follows A Real Enigmatic & Ambitious Woman Like The Dropout's Elizabeth Holmes

As a dramatized biopic about a real-life woman who is equal parts manipulative, enigmatic, and ambitious, Angelyne draws natural comparisons to The Dropout and Elizabeth Holmes. Like Holmes, Angelyne is an absolute mystery. For both women, there's no telling what's an act, what's a lie, and how much of it they actually believe. Angelyne and Holmes are both incredibly inscrutable, which gives both of their biopics the same uncanny feeling.

Both shows are character studies of fascinatingly complex and controversial women, which are their main selling points. Both Amanda Seyfried in The Dropout and Emmy Rossum in Angelyne disappear into their respective roles and leave the audience with a wholly unnerving and uncertain figure to examine. They're wildly ambitious and willing to do anything to achieve their dreams, which makes for a gripping biopic in both cases.

Angelyne actually goes a bit further into the enigma that is Angelyne than The Dropout does with Elizabeth Holmes. There are points in this show where Angelyne will break the fourth wall and physically take control of the narrative, changing events of the past in real-time to fit her curated image. Angelyne uses its very format to add to the myth and the uncertainty that surrounds the real Angelyne and make her seem larger-than-life, and it does it all without ever fully condemning her.

Angelyne Has The Same Format & Period-Accurate Vibes As Daisy Jones & The Six

While Angelyne is very similar to The Dropout in its fascinating main character, it also shares a lot of DNA with Daisy Jones & the Six. Like Daisy Jones & the Six, Angelyne is presented as a faux documentary, complete with conflicting interviews from Angelyne herself and all the people she affected. Angelyne also presents an incomplete picture of Angelyne's life and rise to fame, just as Daisy Jones & the Six only offers certain perspectives on the band's many exploits, romances, and musical career.

Angelyne also shares more specific details with Daisy Jones & the Six. Both primarily take place in Los Angeles in the 1970s and 80s, and both are remarkably diligent in accurately portraying roughly the same period. Everything, from costumes to set designs, even the sexual harassment of the entertainment industry at the time, is accurate. Daisy Jones & the Six feels like an exploration of the 70s and 80s themselves, and Angelyne perfectly recreates that feeling.

As an added bonus, Angelyne even starts out as a musical drama like Daisy Jones & the Six. Angelyne begins her rise to fame by inserting herself into a band and renaming it Baby Blue, just as Daisy eventually joins the Six. The first episode of Angelyne dives deep into Baby Blue's internal struggles and reservations about Angelyne and explores the way the band implodes upon itself. In short, if you liked Daisy Jones & the Six, you're guaranteed to like Angelyne.
