Massive driver’s license data breaches at the Japanese car-sharing service Times Car, caused by a cyberattack, have sent many people scrambling to get their licenses reissued.

The rush apparently reflects fears that their license data could be abused. Police, however, say that reissuing a license would do little to prevent crime.

The National Police Agency is urging financial institutions and other businesses to verify identities thoroughly, and is calling on individuals to consult police immediately if they suspect fraud or misuse of their personal data.
