DPR Speaker Puan calls for stronger IPU role in promoting peace

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani called on the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to play a stronger role in promoting peace and a fairer global order.
The call came following the election of Milton Dick as the organization's 32nd president during the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, on Friday, which Puan attended herself.
"My presence here is a reflection of my personal support and that of the Indonesian parliament for the IPU presidential election," Puan said.
She emphasized that the IPU presidency will play a crucial role amid shifting global dynamics.
According to her, the organization must step up its efforts to address increasingly complex geopolitical challenges, as well as economic and socio-cultural issues affecting people worldwide.
Puan underscored that parliament holds a strategic position as a bridge between the sovereignty of the people and state power, tasked with translating the people’s voice into laws, budgets, oversight mechanisms, and public policies.
She also noted that parliament's job is not merely to create good policies on paper, but to ensure they work in practice for the people.
“Therefore, the IPU provides space for us to voice our shared interests, particularly in strengthening multilateralism, peace, sustainable development, and the role of parliaments in addressing global challenges,” she said.
In the election, Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives Milton Dick won the presidency with 56 percent of the vote. Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova secured 33 percent, while Chilean Senator Rojo Edwards Silva received the remainder.
The 153rd IPU Assembly, held from October 5 to 9, carries the theme "Enhancing Good Governance and Empowering People through Inclusivity, Trust, and Opportunities for All."
