The PlayStation 3 generation was pretty inarguably the most difficult one that Sony has ever had to navigate. The console was undoubtedly powerful, but a very steep price and the genuine brilliance of the Xbox 360 gave them some genuine problems for the first time in the West.

That said, it was a beefy piece of hardware for the time, and some great games were hosted on the platform that didn't get enough credit at the time. Happily, the ability to play many of those games on the PS5 has brought them back to relevance, including a genuine 10/10 remaster of one of the best games of all-time.

Resident Evil 4 Leon

The history of Resident Evil 4 really is one of the most interesting in gaming as a whole. The GameCube original is one of the best releases in the legendary horror series to date, but since then we've had a myriad of different versions, all of which bring something a little different to the proverbial party.

Though players on the PS5 will likely immediately think of the 2023 remake as the only way to play (and it is brilliant), it changes a lot about the original experience, and they are functionally different games in most ways. If you have a hankering to play the original in 2026, one of the best ways you can do so is via the 2011 PS3 remaster, which retains almost everything about the original, while at the same time upping the presentation for HD displays.

It isn't a remake or remaster, but nor does it really need to be, it just needs to make playing the original game a lot more convenient in the modern day. At the same time, it also includes all of the extra content that originally appeared in the PS2 version, including Ada Wong's Separate Ways Campaign, Assignment: Ada, The Mercenaries, as well as unlockable weapons and additional costumes.

Happily, the PS3 HD version of Resident Evil 4 is available on PlayStation Plus Premium as a cloud-streamed title from the Classics catalog. It probably serves as the quintessential way to play the original game at this point, and all at no extra cost if you're signed up to PS Plus' highest tier.

Resident Evil's Jill Valnetine stands and looks blankly ahead while Chris, Leon, Rebecca, and Claire stand behind her.

Next up on the list for Resident Evil fans is the remake of Code Veronica, which is set to launch on an as yet unannounced date in 2027. The original is more divisive than most of the remakes we have seen so far, so let's see if Capcom manage to pull a rabbit out the hat once again, just as they did with Requiem.
