3 Best Movies To Watch On Netflix This Weekend (September 19-20)

Netflix subscribers will find an intense selection of movies to watch on the streaming service this weekend, and I would even suggest going for a nervous, dark, and thrilling three-movie binge if you have the time. On last weekend's Netflix movie recommendations, I explored films like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Why Did I Get Married Again?, and Those Who Wish Me Dead.

I'm glad to say that all three of those films are still trending on Netflix in the United States, which means that they remain timely releases on the streaming service for those who have not yet checked out the fantasy masterpiece, the new Netflix Original movie, and Taylor Sheridan's R-rated neo-Western thriller. Those Who Wish Me Dead is currently at 5th on Netflix nationwide.

The Jon Bernthal and Angelina Jolie action movie stands right below Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which is at 4th, and Tyler Perry's new comedy, Why Did I Get Married Again?, currently at 3rd on Netflix in the United States. Those three movies came in completely different genres, allowing viewers to find which project was more to their liking.

For this weekend's Netflix movie recommendations, I picked three intense projects. One of them is an animated movie from a horror franchise that could not be more timely, the other is the 2026 thriller that is leading Netflix's charts, while the final pick is an R-rated action thriller with major stars like Alan Ritchson and Henry Cavill. These are the best movies on Netflix this weekend:

3 Resident Evil: Damnation (2012)

First up is the only animated movie on the list, Resident Evil: Damnation. It arrived on the streaming service on September 2, alongside multiple movies from the horror franchise. With the release of Zach Cregger's new Resident Evil movie in theaters this Friday, September 18, I felt that pairing that film, which boasts a stellar 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a Resident Evil movie on Netflix would be perfect.

Different from the new theatrical release, Resident Evil: Damnation follows the franchise's fan-favorite character, Leon S. Kennedy, who is on a mission in Europe to stop the spread of deadly biological weapons. Resident Evil: Damnation boasts a rare perfect 100% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critical Role's Matthew Mercer does phenomenal voice work as Leon.

2 The Seemingly Perfect Family (2026)

Next up is The Seemingly Perfect Family, an unnerving thriller that has shot up streaming charts to become the most-watched movie on Netflix in the United States after arriving on September 15. The dark thriller follows the story of Lexi, an 18-year-old who goes straight from foster care to work as an au pair for what initially looks like the perfect family.

However, she quickly learns that the family is not quite as nice as it seems, and things take a horrifying turn. The 2026 thriller is inspired by true events, with its story being quite similar to the case of the French au pair Sophie Lionnet. While I will not spoil it, even those who have read or heard about that case will be surprised by how The Seemingly Perfect Family plays out on Netflix.

1 The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024)

Finally, the star-studded action thriller of the weekend on Netflix is The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. After coming to Netflix on September 16, the war thriller quickly rose to become the streamer's 2nd most-watched movie in the United States. It makes sense, as the fast-paced action and sharp dialogue that one usually finds in movies directed by Guy Ritchie is once again present here.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare's impeccable cast elevates the already exciting material, with stars like former Superman Henry Cavill, Reacher's Alan Ritchson, Young Sherlock's Hero Fiennes Tiffin, The Princess Bride's Cary Elwes, Crazy Rich Asians' Henry Golding, and more telling the story of a secret team put together in World War II. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is the adrenaline-inducing movie to end the weekend on Netflix on a high.
