Northern Mindanao cops boost school security after Banga shooting

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Spurred by recent school shootings in the country, Northern Mindanao police are pushing for a “whole-of-community” defense to protect students both inside and outside the classroom.

Brig. Gen. Nestor Babagay Jr., Police Regional Office-10 (PRO-10) director, has ordered commanders to intensify police visibility around campuses — particularly during school opening, recess, and dismissal — following violent incidents in Tacloban City, Zamboanga City, and Banga, South Cotabato since June.

To bolster physical security, Babagay directed police units to encourage schools to utilize handheld metal detectors for thorough campus inspections by designated personnel. However, he pointed out that hardware must be paired with active community vigilance.

“The safety of our youth is the responsibility of us all. More than ever, we need the active cooperation of parents, schools, and the whole community,” Babagay said in Filipino on Monday.

He urged the public to listen to the youth and immediately report any signs of danger or distress.

The police official also called on parents and guardians to actively monitor their children’s online activities and watch for emotional warning signs that may require professional support.

For households with firearms, Babagay issued a strict reminder on responsible gun ownership to prevent minors from accessing deadly weapons.

“If there is a firearm in the home, ensure it is secure and inaccessible to children. At the same time, concerns involving children must be addressed with compassion, appropriate intervention, and respect for their rights and welfare,” he said.

The PRO-10 initiative is being heavily coordinated with the Department of Education, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, and local government units. The security push aligns with the PNP’s Enhanced Managing Police Operations (EMPO) under its current agenda to protect students./coa
