Prime Video's 'Reacher' Kicks Off a Whole New Era This Week

Reacher Season 4 is set to reach an explosive conclusion this week with the finale, "Cut," debuting on September 16. The premiere not only marks the end of an era, but the beginning of a new one for the globally successful franchise, as that same day features the premiere of Neagley, the Reacher franchise's first-ever spin-off — a bold swing that could potentially strike out or hit big.

Neagley Finally Takes Center Stage in Her Own Series

The first three seasons of Reacher have established Frances Neagley, played by Maria Sten, as Jack Reacher's (Alan Ritchson) best ally and a brilliant investigator. She’s an excellent fighter and an ace sniper, and has even saved Reacher's life multiple times throughout the flagship series. Now, Neagley is sitting out a season of Reacher for the first time to headline her own show. It's certainly been an adjustment not seeing Neagley lend her invaluable help to Reacher in Season 4, as Sten has been the only recurring actor in the series, besides Ritchson, from the beginning.

As a bonus, Prime Video is releasing all eight episodes of Neagley Season 1 immediately at launch. It's an interesting strategy, and one Prime Video and Paramount Television haven't taken in years since Reacher Season 1 premiered in 2022. Reacher has adopted a hybrid release schedule, with three episodes available at launch and the remaining airing weekly, since Season 2. It appears that Prime Video is hoping for a breakout success with Neagley, similar to Reacher's dynamite first season.

Reacher Finally Gets To Play Sidekick in 'Neagley'

The other unique aspect of this new era of the Reacher franchise is that the titular character will appear in two shows for the first time, with Ritchson reprising his iconic role in Neagley in a guest-starring capacity. The shoe will be on the other foot for once, as Neagley calls in her former mentor for an assist with one of her investigations. What's even better is that Neagley takes Reacher to a Chicago Cubs game, as the actors were previously seen filming for the spin-off at Wrigley Field.

Reacher is constantly in fight-or-flight situations in his own series, and it's rare to see him enjoying himself or taking some leisure time. Baseball has also long been one of Reacher's favorite sports, as he often uses obscure names of old New York Yankees second basemen as his aliases. As Neagley said in Reacher Season 2, they shouldn't stay in touch only when they're in trouble, and Reacher clearly honors that promise by watching a Cubs game with his close friend.

'Reacher's New Era Is a Bold Swing for the Franchise

Within the last four years, Reacher has become one of Prime Video's most popular shows. However, the franchise's success has largely rested on Ritchson's shoulders until now. Although Neagley was a fixture in the series' first three seasons, it's unclear if viewers will want to watch the character in her own spin-off. However, the Neagley experiment is a bold step worth taking for the overall franchise, as the new show promises to explore her backstory in ways that Reacher, and even author Lee Child, never did in his books.

Reacher has featured other strong characters outside its eponymous hero, so it will be exciting to see whether viewers have an appetite for a larger television universe that could expand to include even more spin-offs in the future. A prequel series exploring Reacher's early days in the military before he forms the 110th unit could work similarly to the Bosch: Start of Watch prequel that’s currently in the works for the Bosch franchise. Plus, as we previously suggested, it would be a great idea for Oscar Finlay (Malcolm Goodwin) to get his own series. Nevertheless, this new era for Reacher could serve as a complete game-changer, with viewers getting two shows in the same universe to enjoy in the same year.
