Why the flotsam fuck is Captain Sandy talking to Nathan Gallagher?!

An absolutely stunning moment from an interview with Below Deck Mediterranean Captain Sandy Yawn revealed that she’s in contact with Nathan Gallagher, the former bosun who has warrants for his arrest in two different countries.
Most recently, Nathan was convicted of domestic assault in Australia, and a warrant issued for his arrest.
Asked by Page Six’s Virtual Reali-Tea about the heroic, family-man send-off Nathan got on Below Deck Med—despite being, you know, a piece of shit—Sandy said this:
Well, I don’t really want to comment on what happened because I wasn’t there. I just have heard, you know, third, fourth person down the row.
I think not knowing that information, he had exactly what he deserved because nothing had happened on the boat, right? Or during filming. It was after.
The first line is baffling—there are police records and a court decision and Gael’s public statements, so this isn’t some Deuxmoi bullshit gossip we’re talking about here.
But I can understand her general point: Below Deck Med captured reality at the time it was filmed last year, which was months before Nathan’s arrest.
Since the final moments of the season flashed-forward to show us Aesha’s wedding, I think they also should have done that with an update on Nathan. But the producers/network decided to not tell the audience what happened with Nathan and Gael, and leave us with a happy image instead.
The stunning part of the interview is what Sandy says next. Remember, she does not want to comment on what happened because Sandy was not there. But then she just volunteers this:
Nathan struggles, and I, you know, we talk, and I encourage him to stop drinking and get help, and that’s what he is doing right now.
He stopped drinking, he’s going to meetings. And he’s trying to change his life.
And the next part, hopefully, with his life will be to face everything that he’s done.
The fuck? She’s talking to him regularly?! A man wanted in two separate countries? There’s not a red notice out for him, so it’s not like there’s an international search.
But the bad, bad man skipped out on bail, didn’t show up to court, and, according to Australian authorities, was not even in the country when his court date arrived. (Nathan’s mom, maybe, popped up in the comments of one of Joe’s Instagram posts and said he was in Sydney, so perhaps immigration authorities got that wrong.)
Then there’s the drinking part. I realize Sandy is sober and maybe wants to help others who were in the position she once was. But what does that have to do with anything here? Are we blaming his violence on alcohol or alcoholism? I don’t recall Nathan being drunk every time he threatened to fight someone on Below Deck. Just sometimes.
Her brief narrative here turns Nathan into a victim: he “struggles.” That’s the word to use for your elderly neighbor who’s trying to drag a massive trash can to the curb, not a 28-year-old man who can’t get a decent haircut or show up to court to defend himself against charges that he violently attacked the mother of their child.
And ending with “hopefully” he’ll “face everything”?! This isn’t waking up after a night of partying and facing the mess you made and/or the person you hooked up with. It’s crimes that he’s been convicted of—crimes that caused physical harm.
So it’s all baffling and disappointing and infuriating. And just to reiterate to make sure that I’m not missing anything: CAPTAIN SANDY IS IN REGULAR CONTACT WITH HER CONVICTED EX-BOSUN?!
