Six years ago, famed actor and politician Arnold Schwarzenegger’s environmental foundation backed and provided support for a high-impact agroforestry program in Uganda. The project had been designed to solve two urgent issues in the area, namely deforestation and rural poverty.

The program introduced around 15,000 native fig tree cuttings to smallholder farmers, launched initiatives to protect wild chimpanzee habitats, and generated sustainable family incomes without felling a single tree.Read ahead to know more about the environmental initiative by the beloved actor.

In 2020, Arnold Schwarzenegger funded an environmental initiative in Uganda

In 2020, the ‘Robocop’ actor partnered with Jane Goodall’s organization called the Jane Goodall Institute to provide and grow fig tree saplings, provide a natural habitat for chimpanzees in the area, and replenish the land, among other things.

The main focus of the initiative was on the Mutuba fig tree since the bark harvested from this tree can be turned into barkcloth and can be used as a year-round food source for many species.

The project was also mainly for Western Uganda, specifically targeting the Budongo-Bugoma Corridor. That space acted as a vital ecological bridge for wild populations of endangered Eastern Chimpanzees to thrive in, and the fig trees were being used as a way to protect the species and provide them with a nutritious food source to boost their population growth as well.

Focusing on community building, farmers in ten participating villages received training in sustainable agroforestry, nursery care, tree management, and barkcloth processing, turning residents into active forest guardians with alternative income streams. They were given over 15,000 fig tree saplings to kickstart the reforestation efforts. One of the main reasons why this specific fig tree was selected for the project was that people would not have to chop down the trees to harvest the bark.

Farmers now only harvest the outer layer of Mutuba tree bark. The exposed trunk is wrapped in banana leaves to heal, naturally regenerating new bark for next year's harvest without killing the tree. The "Wrapping Nature in Culture" initiative ran for three years, officially starting in November 2020 and concluding in November 2023. According to the organization’s website, the initiative was a success and culminated in the results that they had been hoping for.

The fig saplings helped revive local craftsmanship and sustainable income sources and were distributed to over 300 willing families in the ten villages that had joined the project.

Goodall and Schwarzenegger sustained and fully funded the project through their organizations over the estimated timeline and reported that the results were a massive success.DISCLAIMER: Figures presented in this article are derived from various public sources and are considered approximate unless explicitly noted.
