Asian Games 2026 Medal Tally: Historic hockey, boxing, wrestling and archery golds power India into top 5

NEW DELHI: India have moved into the top five of the Asian Games 2026 medal tally after a stunning day of gold-medal performances across sports.India now have 16 gold, 25 silver and 35 bronze medals, taking their overall tally to 76 medals.

They are currently fifth in the standings, behind China, Japan, South Korea and Uzbekistan.

China continue to lead the medal table with 162 gold, 81 silver and 73 bronze medals, for a total of 316 medals. Japan are second with 71 golds, 83 silvers and 85 bronzes, while South Korea are third with 33 golds, 39 silvers and 62 bronzes.Uzbekistan are fourth with 20 gold, 23 silver and 22 bronze medals.

Historic hockey gold after 44 years

The Indian women's hockey team produced one of the biggest moments of the Games, beating defending champions China 1-0 in the final on Friday.

The victory gave India their first Asian Games women's hockey gold medal in 44 years. It also secured a direct berth for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Lalremsiami scored the all-important goal in the 10th minute with a superb tomahawk strike. India then defended their lead brilliantly to hold on for the gold.

Sujeet produces stunning wrestling comeback

Sujeet Kalkal added another gold for India in the men's 65kg wrestling category after a dramatic final. The Indian wrestler defeated Tajikistan's Abdulmazhid Kudiev 10-9 after trailing 2-9 at one stage.

Kudiev made a strong start and prevented Sujeet from attacking in the opening period with his arm locks. But once Sujeet understood his opponent's style, he used his speed and technical skills to turn the bout around.He scored eight points in a row and completed the comeback with a decisive takedown with around 20 seconds remaining.

Sujeet then held on to his one-point lead to clinch the gold.

Boxing delivers a hat-trick of golds

Indian boxers also enjoyed a memorable day, winning three gold medals.Lovlina Borgohain won the women's 75kg title, while Parveen Hooda clinched gold in the 65kg category. Ankush Panghal completed the hat-trick with gold in the men's 80kg category.The three victories gave Indian boxing a major boost and added three more gold medals to India's tally.

Women archers beat world champions

India's women's recurve archery team also created history by winning its maiden Asian Games gold medal. Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and Kumkum Mohod defeated world champions South Korea 5-3 in the final.The final was played in windy conditions, with the first two sets tied. Both teams scored 54 points in the first set and 56 in the second before India pulled away to secure the gold.
