Emily Blunt to reprise Sicario role as major update revealed for third film

Translate

Emily Blunt is set to return to the role of FBI agent Kate Macer in the second sequel to the acclaimed action crime thriller Sicario.

The first Sicario movie was directed by Dune's Denis Villeneuve and was written by Taylor Sheridan, who is now best known as the creator of the Yellowstone TV franchise. It was released in 2015, and followed Macer as she was enlisted by a government task force to bring down the leader of a brutal Mexican drug cartel.

The film also starred Benicio del Toro as assassin Gillick and Josh Brolin as covert CIA officer Matt Graver, alongside Daniel Kaluuya as Kate's partner Reggie Wayne. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, including best score and best cinematography, and received rave reviews across the board for its intense action sequences.

A sequel, Sicario 2: Soldado, was released in 2018. Emily Blunt did not return to the role of Kate, but both Brolin and del Toro reprised their roles, with Isabela Merced, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Matthew Modine and Catherine Keener joining the cast.

Now, Emily Blunt has now been confirmed for the third movie, with Brolin and del Toro also returning for more.

Sources have told Deadline that Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has written the script and Padraic McKinley, who directed the Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe movie The Weight, has been hired as Sicario 3's director. The plot and full title are being kept under wraps, and shooting is expected to start in early 2027.

In the meantime, Blunt has appeared in two films this year, The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day, and most recently has been filming A Quiet Place Part III, directed by her husband John Krasinski.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, del Toro received an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor for his turn in Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, and Brolin is due to appear in survival thriller Whalefall and blockbuster epic Dune: Part Three in December.

Sicario and Sicario 2: Soldado are both currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
