When Indonesian migrant workers face problems, the state must be there.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Migrant Workers Protection (KP2MI) said the government had facilitated the repatriation of 43,671 Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) who faced problems abroad during the two years of President Prabowo Subianto's administration, with Malaysia and Cambodia accounting for the largest numbers of returnees.

"Over the past two years, 43,671 Indonesian migrant workers facing problems have been repatriated from their countries of employment," Minister of Migrant Workers Protection Mukhtarudin told ANTARA in Jakarta on Monday.

He made the statement ahead of the second anniversary of the administration of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka on October 20, 2026. Mukhtarudin said the latest data showed that Malaysia and Cambodia recorded the highest numbers of Indonesian migrant workers repatriated after facing problems, followed by several other countries in Asia and the Middle East.

He explained that repatriations were carried out based on the circumstances and problems faced by the migrant workers. Some were deported from their countries of employment for overstaying or violating local laws.

Others were repatriated after being laid off before their employment contracts expired, suffering work-related accidents that prevented them from continuing to work, or experiencing physical or psychological health problems.

During the process, KP2MI coordinates with relevant ministries and institutions, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Indonesian diplomatic missions in destination countries, to ensure that migrant workers facing problems receive appropriate assistance and can return home safely.

In addition to facilitating the repatriation of migrant workers facing difficulties, the government also assists in repatriating those who die in their host countries. During the same period, 1,234 migrant workers' remains were repatriated to Indonesia and subsequently handed over to their families.

"When Indonesian migrant workers face problems, the state must be there. When they fall ill, the state must be there. When they need to return home, the state must be there. Even when a migrant worker dies abroad, the state ensures that their remains can be returned to their family," Mukhtarudin said.

The minister said strengthening protection for Indonesian migrant workers requires joint efforts involving ministries and institutions, local governments, Indonesian diplomatic missions abroad, and other stakeholders.

The government also continues to encourage Indonesians seeking to work abroad to understand official placement procedures so that they can receive protection even before departure.

"We want Indonesians working abroad to leave through official channels, work safely and under protection, and return home safely. That is the government's commitment to protecting Indonesian migrant workers from beginning to end," Minister Mukhtarudin said.
