AI execs to brief UN Security Council on Wednesday

Dario Amodei and Sam Altman have both called to slow the pace of AI development.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will brief the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, a U.N. spokesperson confirmed to ABC News.

The address comes amid a growing global debate over how to rein in increasingly powerful artificial intelligence technology.

Amodei is set to address the council remotely. Altman will be at the U.N. in person.

Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue is also expected to join the briefing, along with Yoshua Bengio, co-chair of the U.N.’s panel on AI.

Hugging Face, which is in a deal to be acquired by Nvidia, made headlines over the summer after OpenAI’s agents hacked the company. The incident has been viewed as a warning sign for how AI models are learning to outsmart their human creators.

Both the CEOs of Anthropic and OpenAI have called to slow down the pace of AI development while simultaneously pursuing advancements in their own AI technology. And they’ve both called for the U.S. and China to engage in discussions over AI guardrails.

OpenAI’s Altman is also expected to attend the state dinner at the White House Thursday with China’s President Xi Jinping. The CEOs of Google, Microsoft, Nvidia and tech titans Tim Cook, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk are also set to attend, according to a senior U.S. official.
