A bus allegedly lost its brakes and crashed into a jeepney along España Boulevard in Manila, leaving one person dead and eight others injured.

The incident happened at around 7 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026, according to a “24 Oras Weekend” report by Jhomer Apresto on Saturday.

The Vehicular Traffic Investigation Section of the Manila District Traffic Enforcement Unit (VTIS-MDTEU) said at least 10 vehicles were affected in the crash and identified the fatality as a woman in her 70s.

“The fatality in this incident was a senior citizen woman around 70 years old. The initial finding is that the impact of the bus collision may have caused her death. Based on our investigation, eight people were injured,” VTIS-MDTEU chief P/Maj. Joel Aquino said.

Among the injured was RJ, a security guard who was on his way home when the crash occurred. He said he was one of four passengers who bore the brunt of the impact when the bus hit the jeepney's rear.

“The bus was speeding, then it hit us from behind. We were shocked and thrown around inside,” RJ said.

RJ suffered a hip sprain and chest pain. He said he was willing to settle with the bus operator if the company would shoulder his medical expenses and compensate him for the wages he would lose while unable to work.

In Apresto’s report, personnel from the bus company were seen speaking with some of the victims but declined to give an on-camera statement. They said, however, that they were already processing compensation for those affected by the crash.

The bus driver, meanwhile, said the vehicle lost its brakes.

“I ask for forgiveness, sir. It was really an accident,” the driver said.

Aquino said the driver would face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple physical injuries and multiple damage to property in relation to Section 8 of Republic Act No. 4136, or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.— Lyjah Tiffany Bonzo/MCG, GMA News
